D2 and Vista

I have had a lot of trouble getting D2 to run on Vista and still haven't really succeeded.
I have changed the compatibilities under properties for both the Diablo II.exe and Game.exe files to the Windows XP mode and have ticked the "Run in 256 colors" and I can still not run the game. Not even when I run it as administrator.
Is there anything ells I need to do? or how can I get it to work? I tried using d2loader but didn't have any success with that either.
I hope some of you clever people know how to fix this problem.

try reinstalling with nothing open after restarting your comp

Ok, is it givin you a error or Can not detect version? Diablo 2 does not need to be modded to change color resolution or loading. Reinstall, Turn on firewall, Run as Administrator and unblock once you alt tab out of the game the first time loading.
