getting involved with limited time

Hi,

I've been using NT3.1/4.0 for a while now and have been really exited about some of it's features.

Naturally I see room for improvement and wish to help the community by creating some sort of mule bot ^.^

My programming background consists of elementary courses (terminal output and light gui creation, and 24 hour AI tournaments for unique 2d grid unit-based turn-based strategy games that basically sound like starcraft - rts) in Java and C++, higher math (Calculus 3), and my buddy (who wishes to help me in my endeavor) is going to be a senior in computer science this fall, so he knows some stuff about how a running program exists in memory, etc.

I would like to know: what sort of things I should read up on before attempting to understand NTbot and NTmap?
For the mule bot there will be several points of interest:
I'll be needing whatever method is used to select in-game menus and look at and rearrange items in the inventory/stash, and will likely have to send commands to the running NTbot to keep it in game while transferring items. Additionally I'll have to get NTbot to create a normal game in the first place, when it needs to dump it's load of awesome items, and initiate/accept trades with the mulebot, etc.
Given what I've seen in the few .ntl files I've had time to look through, this seems totally possible!

Additional goals for the mulebot will be item logging based on mule (so you can easily look through the items you have, find the one you want, know what mule to join with and not have to risk a temp ban trying to find it the usual way), and eventually an organization system of some capacity(even if you have to specify what items to move where via a gui... drag and drop?)

As i said, I'm looking for suggestions on what to study before I attempt to create this program. Thanks!
