About the internet speeds, the problem with the US is that the population density is very low in comparison to the UK or even to the EU therefore it costs a lot per citisen to upgrade. from Wikipedia:

yeah. its good in a way cuz we aren't as crowded, but shit like internet is more expensive for us. i know at my old house i was on a Small cable company for internet and it was 45.95 a month for cable internet and we could only use 5gb of data trasnfer per month. it was 5 dollars extra for every gb we went over.
