To begin with to save myself much time writting this, we're gunna learn some of my shortcut vocab
![]() (copy) = duplicate the top layer you were just working on. So you can have each step to go back to later. (flatten) = flatten all the layers you have by linking them all together then press ctrl+e, make a copy of it, then undo (ctrl+alt+z), backstep till you get back to where all the layers were seperate. Then paste down that flattened version you had just copied. (when using layer modes later you're going to have to flatten them in order to (copy) what you have) So you should have a copy of it all that you can make changes to, and all the original layers that made it under it. (filter modes) = Filter through all of the layer modes and find something you like. If you don't know where the layer modes are, it's in the layer window right below the "layer" tab and above all your layers, to the left of opacity. ![]() (distort) = Just mess up the layer you're workin on, stretch it out, twist it, filter it, skew it, ect. Doesn't need to be too extreme, just do a bit to make the changes visible. - Start out by making a clean 500x500 canvas. - Pick 2 colors, I doubt it matters, but I went with 12829A - greenish, and 55246C - purple ![]() - filter > render > clouds (copy) ![]() - filte > brush strokes > accented edges - 12, 0, 6 (copy) ![]() - filter > distort > pinch - 100% , do ctrl+e twice, to repeat that filter 2 more times. (copy) ![]() - filter > render > lighting effects - settings are up to you, But I always use "omni" for "light type" then. (intensity:100, gloss: 100, material:60, exposure:15, ambience: -29) ![]() - edit > transform > rotate 180° (filter modes) - I eventually went with hard light. ![]() - (flatten), (distort) I just did Edit > transform > skew (stretches the bottom left corner to the left, and stretched the bottom right corner down; you can do whatever you want, this is just to follow the tut. ![]()

- (filter modes) I ended up using Difference. (flatten)
![]() - (distort) I just skew it a bit again, stretched the top left corner to the left, and the bottom right, down. Then did Edit > Transform > Rotate ccw 90°since the layer gets moved off the screen a bit, I just moved it back on. ![]() - (filter modes) I ended up using Pin Light. (flatten) ![]() - Edit > Transform > Rotate 180° (filter modes) ended up using Darken. then I scaled it up making it bigger. (flatten) ![]() - Edit > Transform > Rotate ccw 90°, then I scaled it up again. (filter modes) I ended us using Difference. (flatten) ![]() - Control + U -or- Image > Adjustments > Hue/saturation. Move the saturation to -100 to grayscale it. ![]()

Make a new layer. pick whatever color you want. I used this ugly brown color (92751D). Fill the entire layer solid with that color. Then (filter modes) I ended us using vivid light. (flatten)
![]() - Set the mode to this one to Screen, and copy the layer as it is set to a mode, don't flatten. Copy it 3 times so the mode effect is more intense in brightening up the piece. (flatten) ![]() - Edit > Transform > Rotate ccw 90°, (filter modes) I used lighten. (flatten) ![]() Ok by now you get the idea ![]() ![]() - just for the hell of it (: remember this? ![]() You can pull that layer back up to the top and (filter mode) to it, I used Overlay. to get a different lighting pattern. (I like bringing back old layers and (filter mode)ing them into it. ![]() blarrrrg. I just did 1 more (flatten) then (distort) and (filter mode) then (flatten). To get a cool blury misty look make a copy of what you want. Set the layer mode to Screen, and do a Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. ![]() Yeah, so you can do your own settings and colors and what not now. Also it's a good Idea to do the greyscale, new layer fill with color (filter mode) thing more to keep certain colors in. or just make it whatever color you want. I did it a lot. Sometimes I spend seconds making stuff, sometimes I spend an hour redoing all those steps 900 times. (: Have fun. If you don't get anything let me know. oooh, it's also a good Idea to make brushes out of these. Which I used to do a lot. which you can stamp in later for more random junk. (Edit > Define Brush) This tut is just the basic start of something, It's up to you to do something with it ![]()
11-23-2004, 03:53 AM
Let's make a brush and stuff...
![]() well you don't need anymore tutorials, since you guys already know how to do everything, I've shown you the techniques needed to do everything, you're just too lazy to experiment -_- The word of today kids, is experiment ![]() so make sure you learn the stuff from that first one before doing this it will be much easier (: so start out by typing something onto a black background with white text. Edit > Transform > Rotate ccw 90 ![]() Filter > stylize > wind. make it to the left, press ok. Press Control + F a few times to make it go further. Then do that filter again but make it goto the right this time. So you have equal push on both sides. ![]() now Filter > Distort > polarize (set it to polar to rectangle) and you should get this. ![]() duplicate this layer and do Edit > Transform > Rotate 180. ![]() flatten that, then duplicate it, and Edit > Transform > Rotate ccw 90 ![]() flatten that, then duplicated it, do a Filter > Distort > Pinch at 100%, and then press Control + F a few times ![]()
11-23-2004, 03:54 AM
flatten that, then duplicate it, distort the image somehow, then set an "exclusion" layer mode to that new distorted layer.
![]() Then add some color, whatever you want, I did a brownish color, Make a new layer, Fill it with the color, and set a layer mode to it, like you did in the tutorial i asked you to read first. I went with color burn this time. now see... this is where you experiment and come up with different stuff. It might not look good at first but the more random changed, distortion you do it will start to make a nice abstract. but anyways, after adding that brown layer with the color burn mode on it, you get this color. ![]() Once you have this, you do as you did in the other mode tutorial, by duplicated the layer, flattening, copying, distorting, rotating, filtering thru the modes finding good ones to blend them up, just making experimental abstract piece. ended up getting this, not too much of a change, but i like it ![]() ![]() now, Make this into a brush. Edit > Define Brush. make a new layer. fill it with white. ![]() that wasnt so hard was it? (: now make another layer on top of it. fill it with black, now, get the eraser tool, and set it to your new brush, and stamp down the brush in the center. ![]() you could use this if you want, but im gunna add more. Edit > Transform > Flip horizontal then erase again, centering the brush so you get a symetric pattern look. ![]() mine looks like a little alien from independence day but with angel wings O_o Now make _all_ the layers hidden except for this one. it will look somethin like this ![]() once you have this, Edit > Define Brush to make this little bit of stuff into a brush. You can make more brushes from different distortions, filters, renders, and then even more different, from how you erase the black layer, you could even distory this up a bit and erase more to get a different look. but now watch how you can use it. like for example we can start off making a tag, make a new file, 400x100.
11-23-2004, 03:56 AM
ok, _VERY_ simple, please... people... EXPERIMENT!
a lot of you use pre made brushes and know how simple they are to use, you just slap shit up in whatever color you want. that's all this is, but it's your own brush this time, so you already put the work into making it. stamp down a brown on one layer, then make another layer, stamp on the brush in a different spot with a different color, then change the layer mode around to find something that blends it in. For these 3 I used that first brush we made, that full piece w/o erasing. ![]() ![]() ![]() And then I made those hidden and made a new white layer, and stamped on that other brush, the less cluttered one that looked like an alien. I did 3 layers, and 3 diff colors in diff spots just to make a random look ![]() if you honestly don't understand how to make these tags so far let me know, but it's impossible not to understand >_< Once I got that smaller one, I blended it into the other tags, the bluish one looked dumb so i just did the other 2 (normally I would use this smaller one more, I'm just wanting to show you the technique I guess, and you can experiment on your own with it later.) ![]() ![]() and what the hell lets put some text on it. put an inner shadow and an outer glow on it, then set the layer mode to linear dodge. ![]() Then I made a duplicate of the BG, and pulled the layer OVER the text, just so it looks like the text is gone, and then set the layer mode to screen, and add a gaussian blur to it. Then added a border ![]() ![]() dont have to stop there tho, you can flatten it all, duplicate it, change the color, and set a layer mode to it to blend into the other tag, and get this ![]() but ya, you get the idea. hopefully -_- I could have branched off so many times through this tut and make the worlds longest tutorial but ya, um no... Just really, Get used to doing the whole mode changing, to blend stuff, it makes for awesome abstract. Also get used to distorting your stuff, stretching it, filtering it, rotating it, skewing, ect. You can do that when you start the initial design, you can do it when you create the brush, and do it again when you're stamping the brush down and making the background of your tag, I spend a lot of time just redoing these techniques over and over on top of eachother. You don't have to follow me as I did in this, Normally I would have done more filter modes/ making new layers/ duplicating stuff/ pulling up old layers to mix in/ more distoring. through out everything, it's like reflex to try stuff now. And even when you're doing this stuff you can even mix in filters. seriously just experiment and all will be well.
11-23-2004, 04:49 AM
damn i wish i could do that 1 --^ for some reason my wind funtion does all that stuff on the inside of the text. even when i rasterize it.
11-23-2004, 05:17 AM
make a new file, just make it 200w x 500h for now...
set 2 diff colors on the color picker.. Im just gunna go with these 2. ![]() now goto Filter > Render > Clouds ![]() Filter > Brush Strokes > Accented Edges [settings](you can change later for diff looks of course) ![]() outcome. ![]() now it looks cool of course... you could do many things with it... for 1, Filter > Stylize > Extrude [settings] ![]() outcome. ![]() now with Filter > Brush Strokes > Accented edges you can do a few different looks, theres 3 settings on the filter..edge width, edge brightness, and smoothness.. ill show you whut its like with each set of settings as [high high low, meaning put width to very high, bightness to very high and smoothness all the way down] here is high high low.. ![]() high low low.. ![]() low low low.. ![]()
11-23-2004, 05:18 AM
low low high
![]() and you can mess with the rest.. just try other filters, here are some others from whut we already have just try filter > blur > motion blur will give you scan lines.. ![]() than mess with brightness and contrast... settings at 37, and 83 (of course you can just mess around with settings to get whut look you want) ![]() from that go do accented edges again I set it to 11,17,1 and made this.. looks kinda cool (and again try whutever you want for settings, the more you play the better it looks) ![]() smack up some dumb phrase and presto its a logo. ![]() added accented edges... ![]() each step is a workable BG, and I only used like 3 diff filters, theres like 90 usable filters.. BE CREATIVE!!! |
