Windows or Linux?

You guys like Windows or Linux? I like Windows for my primary systems and servers but Linux for everything else and to play with. ^_^

Windows for your servers???? Christ you've got it all wrong. Use your linux box for your server/firwall and use the Windows PC for everything else. That way you dont have to buy WINE to play window games or wait for people to come out with ports for your distrubution of Linux.

I like using Windows server 2003. I have it for free. RedHat is just too expensive for poor me.

You can use both at the same time? What do you mean use linux for your firewalls? The only expierience i've had with linux is knoppix, if that counts, i dled and tried it using it as a boot disc

OMG lol you got it backwards again! First off, Windows server 2003 is retail software meaning that somewhere down the line you had to have bought it for it to be a legal version. Red Hat has gone downhill since they split the project (in my eyes) so don't waste your time with it. Use SuSE or if anything Mandrake, but use Mandrake for personal or low end servers. You also have Debian, Gentoo, Solaris, even Darwin for x86's now. Don't think RedHat is the best.

You should forewarn that Debian and Gentoo are meant more for those who can program and want more customizability. They are far too "advanced" for someone just starting out in a console based OS. Granted trial by fire can be good but starting off with either could turn people away. On another note I have never used or read about Solaris or Darwin so I dont know about them but x86 is for 64bit proc's only if I understand correctly.

I would never use Mandrake for servers but for the casual computer user who doesnt like windows and its bugs its fine.

Ya RedHat went to crap once they started doing Fadora(SP?) also but some of the earlier versions just before Fadora started are still worth the time and money.

Also dont forget the ever present FreeBSD which is a little more advanced than SuSE or Mandrake but still pretty user friendly and easy to setup if you actually read the guide provided on the net for setup.

Ok, *nix and all BSD distros are for people who know computers. Stick with windows if email and web is all one does.

Second, x86 is the chip archetecture signifying the Intel or AMD chipsets. Sun's and Apple's computers have different chipsets and thus require different os's.

Third, Mandrake is just fine for servers if one recompiles the kernel for the streamlined architecture it needs. It was meant for home use, but so was windows.

I still have my old console based windows and DOS OS's from back in the 80's when I was a kid.

I remember for a year or two when my family first got a comp having to do everything from a DOS prompt.

*shrugs* Our SysAdmin got us copies of Windows Server 2003 Web, Enterprise and Full for free. Fedora is also quite nice.

I like SmoothWall for firewalls. It's a Linux based thing. Works nice.

I'll wait for Fedora Core 3, which isnt out to my knowledge, before I give it a go.

BTW did you read the latest in Linux magazine on what the top distros are? Knoppix somehow actually made the top 14...I was pretty surprised with all the distro's to choose from that Knoppix made the list. Debian and Gentoo did pretty good but SuSe, Mandrake and RedHat took the top three, unsurprisingly.

Yeah Knoppix is great to use on school comps to help get around those nasty bits of blocking software they put on them. Never used BartPE.

I used to run an Enemy territory server on linux. Its pretty good. But windows for everything else.

ummm. every distro of linux is free. the only reason it costs money in a store is because of the software that is attached to the OS. linux sits at the heart of the open source world.

and BTW. any distro of linux is better than win server 2003. if its a personal server do what you will but if your hosting business stuff on it i urge you to please convert. win server 2003 is not only old but is at this moment (if its turned on) is jeopardizing anthing its connected to.
