[/sarcasm] Wrote:I'm glad that Rita came now though, because since it's so close to the landfall of Katrina, the water is still cool, otherwise the storm would have definately reached Category 5. Dont worry. wont reach New Orleans since there high pressure that'll keep rita away. Sounds like u want Rita to hit New Orleans again... Sad...

I don't know where you're getting that from, Slash, I was just saying that Katrina cooled the waters down so the hurricane isn't as bad as it could have been.. But now that you mention it, I would dearly like the hurricane to hit New Orleans instead of here. Call me selfish, but I don't want my house decimated.
Mandatory Evacs aren't until Friday for my city, that gives us time to board up the windows.

Dude, Rita's a Cat. 5 now. It's all over the news.

It's officially the third most powerful hurricane in history...
Get the **** out of there. If you don't leave, you get no pity. Don't be like those idiots in NOLA who tried to ride it out... ![]()

Yeah, third most powerful, category five, blah blah blah. That doesn't mean anything until it hits. It will be going over an area of cooler water, so it will reduce to a category four before it gets to the coast. Also, if it continues to move at 9 mph, it will be over land for approximately two hours before it hits my house (thanks, Google Earth), which is sort of a long time for a storm system to go without water.
Unfortunately, it will take the entire storm something like 20 full hours to reflect (that is, move from one end of itself to another)... and that is sort of a long time to be blowing 100+ mph sustained winds on my front door. We're boarding up the windows and heading out tomorrow, a full day before the storm actually strikes the cost and we're heading for my Aunt's in San Antonio. Did I mention it took my brother a full 5 hours to make it 15 miles? Yeah, and the regular drive to San Antonio is what, 3 hours long? [/kind-of-freaked-out-and-horribly-tired-rant] Sorry. If you read nothing else in my post, read this: This will most likely be my last post for either a couple of days, or a very, very long time, depending on how well this house can withstand flooding and the winds. I'll look on the bright side: My computer tower is on the floor, it will most likely get a little wet, which means that I'll be in order for another computer. Joy.

Well, call me an idiot, but we're staying. The south side of the hurricane has half-speed winds and the projected path leads north of here, through Galveston Bay. In fact, we aren't even really supposed to get the hurricane-force brunt of the storm.
Unfortunately, that means that we'll have to board up every window, not just the back ones. Also, it's supposed to calm down to a Category 3 by the time it gets to land. We'll see what happens.

Good news!
Rita downgraded to Category 4 Winds still at VERY HIGH Cat 4 at 150 mph, just 5 mph shy of category 5. It will make landfall early Satueday Mostly, Katrina and Rita have been very pwoerful and its seperation was only 4 weeks. Scientists are studying these hurricanes that it may have to be due to global Warming since these 2 storms r so strong. No1 nos yet, but mostly all hurricanes that strenthen on the Gulf of Mexico is likely to become the most powerful Hurricanes unlike Ophelia, is was only Cat 1. So far, Rita is confirmed to be the 18th Storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Hurricane season doesnt end until November so hang in there!

The winds being 150 miles per hour is totally misleading. It's like ISP commercials. At it's best, it's going to be 150 miles per hour, in the perfect spot in the eye wall. The winds we'll recieve are 40-80 mph, not enough to even phase my home, I'm sure.

best of luck, stay safe! And its currently a cat. 3 now.
