Weird spyware - need help
#1
Ok so I was going through my horribly spammed Yahoo mail and was marking which emails to delete and which to keep. I accidentially clicked on one instead of marking it, and it opened up, followed by some error message. I closed everything and 10 seconds later some software was automatically installed on my computer (supposedly a spyware scanner), along with my homepage being changed to a web page file in my C:\ drive (which said "You have Spyware! Follow these steps.." blah blah blah. It also changed my desktop wallpaper and locked me out of changing it.

I have removed the files, done full scans for spyware and viruses, and even attempted to change my wallpaper through other means, and it does change, but this picture (shown above) keeps overriding it and masking whatever is there.

As you can see, everything inside the box (all the wallpaper options) is grayed out, and I can't select anything.

What the fack is going on Sad

Edit: Ok I got the stupid wallpaper deleted, now it's just a white screen. But it's still locking me out from changing the wallpaper. =\

Update: The shit it installed on my computer is called SpySheriff. I think I've just about deleted all of it, but something is still blocking me and I can't figure out what. I've even used the Microsoft AntiSpyware program but I'm not out of the woods yet.

Well I was bored at work and I thought I would register and help some people in this Computer Forum. Here is how to change your wallpaper.

Go to run, type regedit press ok.
when that comes up go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Control Panel>Desktop
Now find the orginalwallpaper, right click and select modify.
In the text box type the path to the file you want to be your orginal desktop wallpaper.

Now as far as the buttons bieng locked. Go to Run, type msconfig. Select the startup tab. Uncheck unwanted programs. Click ok, and restart.

Went into regedit, changed it back to what it was, but what's really going on here is something is loading a kind of "wallpaper mask" that covers whatever the current wallpaper is set to. When I restart the computer for a split second I can see the wallpaper before this "mask" is loaded over it. Right now I found the picture and deleted it, so it's just a white background.

As for the msconfig -> startup, that was the first thing I did =)

I've used Kaspersky AV, AdAware, Spybot S&D, Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, and a few others. Each scan came up slightly different and I've deleted anything/everything suspicious.

I just found a computer with this same problem today at work. Goto run>>> type "msconfig" hit enter. Then click system restore. Restore the computer to yesterday, let the PC restart and Bam! fixed.

I actually had the same problem
if i remember correctly it corrupts your Ant-Virus and prevents you from using System Restore....
But ya get linux Smile
You said so much without ever parting your lips.

Corrupts your antivirus, and disables system restore? This isnt some super malicious problem. Those are two totally seperate problems. And yes system restore still works, if you have it enabled. And no it does not disable your anti virus. Where do you get this stuff from??
