I doubt a black hole can get that big. We have a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, as do all galaxies, and it doesn't grow anymore.
Also, from the quote I read and your statement, it seems like he's just talking about time relative to us. Relative to the existence of the universe as we know it. Either that or he's saying that existence of matter just happened. Which, again, would bring us back to how anyway.
Those are the kinds of things that people chalk up to God. There's always the question of how God came into existence, though. That doesn't have an answer, but it makes answering the other easier. And the easy answer is often the right one.
