wierd.. it can't be to change realms coz u only get to choose one... and that's the one ur on, i first thought it was to move items to another realm but no, that was ages ago

It doesn't do anything, except take up space in the corner of your screen.

The gem is mainly used for chat logging. E.g. if you're in a trade channel and want to mark a certain offer/item being sold.. you click the gem, and then when you scroll up you can find it by the distinctive color of the "Gem Activated/Gem Deactivated." Which is exactly what it's supposed to do... :p Hence Blizzard's explanation.

Also, if you click it enough you may get "Perfect Gem Activated" or hear a "Moo" sound occasionally, but those don't do anything beyond that.

Rumors say it also increases your chances of finding rare+ items when you MF, but.. nope. :p
