is the words u type? caz u cant edit it with tools unless u render or so something with it...in 5.5 u have to render.. but in 7 i forgot which one was it..

Alt or Ctrl (I can't remember which one) + U To colourize...

this is kind of hard to comprehend what your question is, but if your saying something like you want the pic to match the color of the background, i believe if you set the renders blending mode to Luminosity it'll match the color of the bg.

If you want the Render to match the BG you could desaturate render (ctrl+shift+U) and then change the color values or whatever it's called (ctrl+b) and move the bars around untill you are happy with it.
At least that's what I do...
