Smite Shield x_X

exile is the way to go dude. idont care how poor u are. u need an exile. wether its eth or not. if u dont wanna pay 10 hrs, get the runes u need (vex, ohm, ist, dol) and a decent 4os pally shield (hopefullywitth atleat 20 res) and make it urself. But there is no way griz vortex shield is better than an eth exile. im sorry

Total waste of runes, just buy a griz shield and be done with it, works for me, and i own anything, so why do i need exile?

mainly for the life tap, cuz there are way better gloves than dracs. plus it has a million times more defense with defiance.

im just reading thru this, WOW, GRIZ!!!!!!!

it was useless a while ago. jeez. i guess il try it.

Wow, this thread is still here...I might as well say a few things then.

Alma is a poor choice for smiters. It beats HoZ by up to a measly 25%ED, but lacks resists, not to mention HoZ also adds 2 to HS, which is 8 base smite damage.

Griswold's shield is very customizable, but it lacks +skills, and has very inconsistent smite damage. I would only use it if I need to stack a lot of resists.

Phoenix shield adds a tremendous amount of damage, but lacks defense and blocking. In a way that makes it the perfect smite vs. smite shield, but it's a glass-cannon shield in every other situation. I use this to specifically deal with Exile users, since by ending the duel quickly with more damage, there's a lower chance of Life Tap triggering...not that it would matter since I'm pulling off 10k+ damage.

Exile seems to be a favorite on these forums. I'll be honest with you. Only 1 out of 20 Exile smiters had a remote chance of beating me. Are the other 19 all poorly built? Most of them had better charms than I did (pCombats with life), and maxed the right skills, whereas I only have 16 points in smite and 10 points in holy shield. Why am I winning with my upped HoZ setup? Is it because they all got unlucky due to vortex shield's pathetic minimum damage? Is it because their 19.25% (Exile + Drac's) chance to cast Life Tap didn't happen? Or was it because of "lag"?

In most duels, I noticed that in order for the Exile opponent to have a slight chance at beating me, his Life Tap must trigger in any one of the first 3 hits. First 2 hits if they were relatively poorly built characters.

The chance of LT being cast in one of the first 3 hits is 47.34645781%.
The chance of LT being cast in one of the first 2 hits is 34.794375%.

I won't give any names, but one Exile smiter in particular, who's in a very well known clan, was killed by me in one hit. Having the word "smite" in his name, I expected him to at least be able to take 3 or 4 hits from my supposedly weaker smite. Perhaps Exile builds also tend to have lower life?

My conclusion: Exile is more suitable for PvM (and maybe against some barbs in PvP), where LT is almost guarenteed to trigger.

I totally agree with arcane.... you just can't beat a HoZ...

ok im working on a smiter to see what the hub bub is, i alrdy have a hammerdine, but im still a noob when it comes to some of the things u guys say. what exactly does "uping" a shield or anything do exactly and what/how do u do it. whats the dif between and exceptional hoz and a super hoz?

Gilded shiled [exceptional] has a smite dmg of 20 - 28
http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/e...elds.shtml

Zakarum Shield [Elite] has a dmg of 46 - 46.

One more thing people...if you're going for Exile, at least choose a better shield. Everyone goes nuts with vortex shields and kurast shields, when they have the worst damages. 5-87? 10-82? You don't even need the extra defense from a vortex shield, since Defiance boosts it up like hell anyway.

Sacred targe - Highest blocking and lowest requirements.
Sacred rondache - Highest average smite damage (0.5 higher than the others). Second highest blocking.
Zakarum shield - Most consistent smite damage (46-46).
#51
the vort damage used with holy shield increases from 10-82 to arround 30-130

Those r just a version of what holy shield can do to the damage, but with a grief/lw it really is better to get HOZ or Vort exile
#52
Cmon u just CANNOT beat the good ol' HoZ.

Yep, Zoded eth up'ed hoz is the best i geuss for pvp

For Ubers (trist) i'd say exile

MooMan Wrote:Yep, Zoded eth up'ed hoz is the best i geuss for pvp
I'd rather go with a non-ethereal one, since it has a free socket. Smite duels don't require defense anyway.
#55
i gotta go with exile for one reason. LIFE TAP. if you don't have draculs this will save your *** more times than you can count. but contrary to everyone elses beliefs the best type of shield for exile is a zakarum shield simply because it has the most consistent damage and really high defense eth. throw in a grief and you can't lose.
#56
i agree with deadly guy but ONLY when it comes to PVM

Life tap is useless when it comes to pvp. U run out, smite like 4 times and ur dead, life tap has a 15% chance of being cast, and PvP does not last long enough to work

For PvM, the ubers are owned by lifetap Smile
#57
well for pvp thats when u rely on your godly greif to do 12k unblockable damage each hit :p. plus if you throw a holy freeze aura up right before you engage you can have a huge advantage speedwise even if the other guy is more powerful you'll get more hits in and more chance to tap.
#58
Up'd Hoz + Last Wish PB.

12k is only possible with Grief + Fortitude + Phoenix. Exile doesn't fit in.

A typical Exile + Fortitude + CoA setup gets you up to 9.7k Smite. If you use Enigma instead, then it's about 8.4k.

Holy Freeze doesn't give you much of an advantage. The slow is removed a split second after you switch back to Fanaticism.

Emolliated. Wrote:Up'd Hoz + Last Wish PB.
The damage added by Last Wish's Might aura is nothing compared to Grief. The Crushing Blow might be useful against Ubers, but that's about it. Last Wish is ridiculously overrated and overpriced.

well i was told about 12k but i never did the formula myself. but anyway ur wrong about holy freeze because when i fight ww barbs with it i use it to freeze them while they're mid ww and do shift+smite and pwn them. now if they have raven frosts or something that gives cannot be frozen or half freeze duration or something like that then sure its useless. but it works 75% of the time. even better for those pesky shoot 'n run zons. but holy freeze doesn't have to stay on for the effects to work they stay frozen for the amount of time it says when you use first use it.
