Drinking age
#1
I am not a drinker, and I am way past 21, so this doesn't really affect me. But I am curious to hear what you think. Should the drinking age be lowered to 18? Personally, I feel that if someone is old enough to vote, and join the military, he or she should be able to choose if he or she would like to be able to have a drink.

Well that is a verry contriversal (dont know if i spelled it right) arguiment amoung teens today me as one of these teens think that drinking should be legal at 18 because in my eyes if you can kill a man at war when your 18 you should be well able to drink. ME im 17 and I drink here and there but im not a big drinker I prefer the other stuf in life.

I don't think highschool kids meaning some that are 18 are mature enough to drink. Imagine the mortality rate of kids in highschool and how this would increase. Not to mention the contribution to additional teens under the age of 18/parties and such. Horrible Idea at least at the age of 21 most and I say most not all people have moved on past the high-school mentality and have matured a little more. I know, I know theres you that are the "exception" to the rule, but you have to consider the majority. I've got three children of my own and I'm only 29 so not old and I would never want them to have the legal right to drink while there still in high-school. Oh and I'm also currently in the military (11+years), sure some would argue if your old enough to give your life for your country then you should b old enough to drink. Well you can, just get stationed somewhere overseas and drink to your hearts content. Believe me most troops in the military at that age have still not grown up either. Just because you enlist does not all of a sudden mean your matured. 21 and long live it!

Before I even being to voice an opinion I would like to know what group of people sat down one day and decided "Huh...18yrs old sounds like a good round number. Lets make that the age to smoke." or "21yrs old that's when people understand how to consume alcohol in a mature fashion.".

I mean seriously where do people get these numbers from? My 6th grade science book clearly stated, and I remember this vividly, "...not all people mature at or by the same age or time, therefore we can only estimate when one has "matured"."

An estimate is an educated guess meaning you have to be intelligent to make an estimate otherwise your talking out your ***. If thats true then the last time I looked at the american politician none of them are suited to even estimate the time of day more or less what age someone should be allowed to smoke or drink.

LOL, good point Sinner, so could we say since smoking is actually more hazardous to your health than alcohol (moderately) the age should b the same or even better older for smokers?

No I'm just saying that scine different people mature differently the only real way you can effectively ensure people are old enough to NOT abuse a substance is to make the age requirement so outlandish they wont even care by the time they get that old.

Just and fyi, i do believe that if you enlist in the military you can drink on base. So if you are dying for your country you can drink too. The enlistment age is 18 for those who didn't know that. As far as drinking age being 18, no. I don't think it should be 18 for the simple fact that a high school senior shouldn't be drinking. As a general statement they aren't smart enough to not drink and not drive. And sinner, i see your point of not knowing when someone is gonna mature. College most definitely helps you mature though, at least for everyone i know that is there or graduated.

I think the biggest problem with drinking now a days is that no one knows moderation. All the parties i've been too at least half the people there are so plastered that i'm not sure they could find their own feet. If people could learn to have a drink or 2 then there wouldn't be a problem with the drinking age being 18 or for that matter lower. Look at most of europe, where you can drink from an early age. But they also know moderation. There were 2 german exchange students here last year. Everytime we partied with them, they didn't get wasted. They didn't see a point to getting wasted. And in europe there is less alcoholism, and less drinking related deaths. SO that's my take on it.

I'd probably have to say at the age of 18 ( With Exceptions ) .. But don't make it an everyday thing ... if you've matured and are willing to pay the consequences of drinking then go right ahead.. therefore if your not willing then don't be willing to lift the bottle.. By letting them drink they might feel important and older and all bada$$ and some will take it out of hand ...all i have to say is in order to drink you better be willing to pay the consequences when something serious happens..

I've been to college stayed in a dorm to be matter-a-fact about it and truth be told most people in college drop IQ points the longer they are there. I wouldnt trust a single one of them with a bottle of rum, a set of car keys and the car they belong to. Simply cause most of them have no idea what their limit is and thus they usually dont even KNOW their wasted or beyond the ability to drive a tricycle more or less a car.

Personally I dont really care what the drinking age is. People will do as they please or at least find a way to so imposing laws does nothing but make people try harder to achieve a goal. I have little to no faith in the ability of the human race to make any sort of logical decision reguarding the use of illicit drugs and alcohol.

that borders on the most illogical and inane post I ever seen.

Eh, what you can't have you will alway's want even more so. In my experience most people don't know moderation and overdo most of the time, but I dont see that we really need to have a drinking age at 21 since every one I know already drank by the time they were 13.

It's become commonplace for parents to start offering drink's to thier kid's by the time thier 17 and I think that's a good idea, let them learn what it's like at home.

Really, so a 18 year old HIGHSCHOOL student should be able to drink. Funny thought of a group of 18 year old kids after a football game driving around s*** faced and knowing that it was legal for them to buy alcohol not to mention all the under 18 kids they bought for that night. My god we might as well let them start at 14 since 18 year old highschool kids on the majority side won't have the mentality to make the right decision. As for smoking, it's ignorant to allow something that has more of a health risk to be sold at a younger age.
