well for my computer when i press f8 at startup and have a windows disc in the drive i could choose to reformat my computer and people do this to get rid of viruses

Be sure to back up any important files to a CD or DvD because once you reformat, that's it.

Ha, people do it for virus's because they dont know how to get rid of them. You do it to simply clean up your computer and start new. I do it about every 5 months. It just makes your computer run better. In a nut shell....Get a universal start up disk, go into system bios and boot from floppy. Pop in the disk, then you have to do some stuff, might wanna look that up I dont want to go into detail. Then after its formated everything is erased you put an os on it. Takes a while but very simple.

if your using windows 2000 or xp then just put the cd in the drive and restart then it will ask you to boot from cd or not, hit yes and then go threw windows setup, when it asks you about partitions then format the partitions that are there and delete them then create a new partition and have it use all the space it can, then just go threw it.
o yea when you format then use ntfs format for windows 98 and bellow go to were you shutdown but only restard it ms-dos mode then when it comes up type in the command: format c: then it will ask you a bunch of questions that are common sence and when it comes up to the partition screen, delete all the current partitions and then make a new one using all the avalible disk space, then just install windows o yea if it asks you what type of format to do for windows 98 do fat format does that make it cleer as mud?

It doesnt matter if he did or not, there is no way possible that it just randomly started up with windows xp. You need some kind of os cd. Im sure you have it but its lost somewhere in your house.

Im sure you have it but its lost somewhere in your house. When you buy a pre-built computer USUALLY, meaning I am yet to find a company that doesn't, they install windows on your computer for you as a "courtesy" (aka we want to install crappy programs that will bug you to purchase them every 30 days). So if (s)he purchased a pre-built they could have lost the cd or sometimes, happened with my brothers desktop, they "forget" to include the windows altogether. What I was really getting at is that if its a pre-built from a still running company simply call the customer service rep and request a new windows boot disk and cd. Most will acomodate you as long you have the serial number they assigned the machine, usually on a sticker somewhere on your computer. Easy as that. Then just plop in the boot disk, restart and follow the prompts to reformatation(is that even a word?).

If you didn't get it, I didn't read any of this so sorry if said. Pop in Windows[legit]XP CD, boot computer from CD Rom, while doing setup, in blue screen, format hard drive. Very easy.
