My way of brushing:
Start with black black background.
When you brush your first layer of brushes Click Ctrl+I to invert and keep adding new brushign and keep doing this untill something good comes out.
Hint: Try avoiding using same brush on the same layer too much.
Also all this brushing is done in white brush 100% transperencyand backgound layer.

colourize it?
Select the colur on the left lol..
Usually start with clouds first...To have the 'feel'...
My only advice[thgrave said quite a few]-->DO NOT drag brushes...NEVER drag brushes on a layer...[or w/e]...Looks horrid...
[Unless ure making an abstract combined with filters]

Drag brushes means click and drag the mouse to the side wich will make an ugly mud looking effect, when you brush always just 1 click per brush.
Also another advice do your background in grey (it will come out sort of grey) then colorize by clicking new layer -> new color balance or something like this.
