B!tch, the late John Paul II proved that the pope DOES have control. He literally stared down the Polish Communist party after they had practically taken over... And while he doesn't exactly have the power to stop anti-abortion shit, he has a great influence over world leaders and has an extremely extensive intelligence agency, i.e. every Catholic missionary or church on the face of the planet.

John Paul II was very influential and a good speaker, however.
Not to mention a very good author, and an overall charismatic human being, especially considering his conditions Ratzinger, however, looks like Emperor Palpatine.

I'm not saying he is going to control you, he's not the puppet master Pope. He's simply the leader of the Catholic Church. He has the power to revise church doctrine, says what's yay and what's nay. And when I was talking about abortion, I was talking in the terms of how the church looks open it. Dont view the church as an institution trying to impose it's views on you. The Church is simply the ground rules for those who are of the Catholic faith. Their doctrine does not apply to those who do follow it, just as one country's laws do not apply to those who live in another country. Pope Benedictus XVI simply will not be more liberal in the church's view on abortion, as well as the acceptance of homosexuality. I'm not here to debate whether you follow it or not or whether anyone follows it for that matter. He is the leader of the Catholic Church, a religious institution. Him being Pope does make him different. He is the symbol of the Church. When people think of Catholism, they thing of the leader, which in this case will be Pope Benedictus XVI. So... Good Day Sir.

Edit: And by the way, just to your post on him not influencing people. Don't believe that just because you do not take the word of the church and Pope, others do not. There are many Catholics, some I know very well, that do take the word of the Pope. There are over a billion Catholics in the world. For you to say he is not any influence, you should really tell that to thousands of people who stayed to see a newly elected Pope. I understand some were not satisfied with the Conclave's decision but nonetheless, he is their new Catholic figurehead and leader.
