First, if you have no def = GG to you. ED means nothing if you die before hitting thme.

zealot: exile i'd say if its between phoenix and exile since i think phoenix casts firestorm on 3rd hit or so stopping your zeal which is very bad.

smiter = exile because phoenix ed only doesnt work for smite its 100%enhacned damage = 1 smite dmg so phoenix's 350-400%ed will only add 3.5-4 dmg to your smite exile is a much better join more defense defenseive aura you can also get one with 45 all res and 2 to defenseive skills good block (need i say more?)

i dueled ww, and zelot with Death zearker, and phoneix... both had botd the zelot had botd and HOZ, and i coultn hit for shit

nope your pretty wrong tuna. exile is pretty useless on a smiter since smite hits 95% of the time which means your defense is pretty friggen useless as it will just be ignored anyway.
exile is alright on a zealot, but its not that great.
phoenix is meant for smiters because its dmg adds a lot to smite meaning its a 1 hit kill. im not sure of the exact amount it adds but its something like 1 smite dmg per %. with a 65% base dmg shield u could have 465% ed, which could be 232 smite dmg atleast if the % dmg is lower.

and since when do you need resistances against people that use exile or phoenix?

What the hell are you talking about? For Smiters, all non-weapon sources of enhaced damage work exactly the same way as they would for any attack.

Anyhow, Exile is for defence, Phoenix for damage. Attack rating doesn't matter for a Smiter, but for a Zealot, an Alma Negra is a lot better (you'll even hit your enemy once in a while)!

try it make a monarch with 400%ed then make a regular monarch and see how much more smite dmg it adds ...

Once again, this is because of the lying character screen. The additional damage is there, it just won't show it.

i have an idea. make a character on open bnet with 10000 life. make a pure dmg smiter with a 465% ed phoenix zak and u can put like 15 700% ed charms, with ed being based on lvl. now hit the character that has 10000 life and see if he dies with the charms on. then drop all the charms and switch the phoenix zak to a regular zak shield and hit him again.
