I've noticed many of you complain that Diablo II is losing its draw, and that one of its few saving graces was the discovery of maphack. That's far from the truth. Maphacks, bots, and tradehacks are the downfall of Diablo II, and it's our fault. Oh yes, the "wonderous" day maphack was discovered, all of you cheaters and defilers migrated from open realm Battle.net to closed realm, realizing that cheating could suddenly help you achieve a lofty goal. You've become so reliant on your maphacks that many of you threatened to stop playing without them. My point? Anyone ranked on ladder, anyone that plays for that matter, without maphack, is 10x the gamer you'll ever be.

First off, I agree with you. Second, I agree with you only in the manner that one who is addicted to a substance agrees that it is bad. I cannot stop using it, and here's why:
At my level ( and anyone at an "advanced level" in the game), the point of the game, and what I spend my time doing when I play, is magic finding or visiting one boss over and over again. While I realize that maphack is NOT necessary for the playing, it becomes more repetitive when one must travel through and waste mana and time through 5 ( countess ), 3 ( baal ) or 2 (meph/pit/whatever) when it can easily be done by finding the easiest path to the next level. You, on the other hand, don't have to associate with us "cheaters" if you don't want to. Just create passworded games..no hack out there can join passworded games. Play by yourself...make games with names like, "legit players" or something akin. I disagree that a gamer who plays w/o MH is 10x the gamer I am, or someone else who cheats and "defiles" is. It takes no more skill to teleport around and find the area you're looking for than it does to know where you're going. That is saying that a man with a map going through a jungle is a less skilled man than one who runs through the jungle blindly, hoping to find the other side. That is horrible logic. There is no skill handicap associated with maphack. Maphack gives no advantage but that of time.

I don't play public games as it is, my main qualm is with ladder ranking. Bots give hardcore players an all too significant advantage. Whether it's bot assisted levelling or programs which allow a quick logout in dangerous situations, it hurts players who play hardcore legitimately.

I share the same opinion as rossalexander and Mh is a handicap in my opinion, to find the shortest way by knowing how the maze generated maps work or just find the shortest way based on past experience require some deeper knowledge than simply loading Mh

On top of Spikes' valid points, on Diablo II ladder (Vanilla or Expansion), time is of the essence. Unlike Warcraft and Starcraft ladder where skill is always a factor, maphacks and bots eliminate the need for any skill. With Diablo II (especially on hardcore) it simply becomes who levels the fastest, and who needs not fear death.

i agree with the foog/aka mr. cynic. see, it is possible for people to memorize the map patterns of certain areas for d2. but that is time consuming. and botting in hardcore? how many people have died atleast once while botting on non hardcore? i can raise my hand to that. now... is it possible for people to bot in hardcore without dying and gaining lvls? yes i think it might be. but you would need the best video card, a computer with atleast 3 ghz, over 1 gig of ram, a fibre optics internet, and a very well equipped character. who actually has the time or money to obtain all these items? whoever doesn't will eventually be botting one day and hit a lag spike at the wrong moment then die.
i'm surprised that people are complaining about the new anti cheating measures bnet is placing in. for all the people that bot and do not get banned the price of the items their bot finds will be higher anyway.
if i got banned i'd just start over without hacks.

i totally disagree with u ross, before i had mh i mf fine, when i got it i sitll mf fine, it doesnt matter either way, ur still mf just one will probably do it better, and when u talk about skill on d2, personally i dont think d2 takes very much skill at all, all u do is shoot or attack with one click of the mouse or the other click, not very hard, i have met teht dumbest ppl at school then they become able to play this and beat ppl in duels, so it doesnt amtter either ur both sitll going to get to the same spot.
