NASA to be Sued for planned Comet Destruction
Submitted by scienott on 5/7/2005 2:30:38 AM
An astrologer, who received approval from a Russian court, plans to sue NASA over its planned mission to blow a crater in the Tempel 1 comet. The claimant, Russian Marina Bai, says that such an act will "disrupt the natural balance of the universe" and wants $300 million in damages.
In a $279 million project, a spacecraft called Deep Impact was launched in January which will intercept the comet and release a 370-kilogram self-guided impactor which, on July 4th, is expected to make a football stadium-sized crater in its target. Effects of the collision will be visible from earth with an amateur telescope.
Scientists believe that the resulting crater will yield clues to the formation of the solar system and provide important information on altering the course of comets or asteroids on a collision course with Earth.
The astrologer's lawyer says, "My client believes that the NASA project infringes upon her spiritual and life values as well as the natural life of the cosmos and would disrupt the natural balance of forces in the universe." ABC

yes the atom bomb blows a pretty big hole but the ones they use on the mission arent nuclear. hmm pretty typical of americans. explore and learn by blowing something up

You guys, a football stadium is more than 100 yards, that is just the length of the feild. The stadium would be a bit bigger.

when people see football stadium, they just think 100 yards. i think what he said was intending the size of the field. they practically mean the same thing.

If this is going to disrupt the natural balance of the universe, why exactly is Russia getting the money for damages? It isn't like they have Russians on the comet or anything. I'd like to see what three million dollars in the hand of a Russian will do to reestablish harmony of the Solar System, seeing as one comet doesn't affect much other than the solar system we live in.
Also, what does NASA have against this comet anyway?

use the edit button. anyway, it's is absolutely ridiculous to sue for $300 million. that russian person didnt even know about the comet until NASA announced its plans. it is frustrating that we have these kinds of people and even more frustrating that we cant go and end their pitiful existence

In addition... If he's suing for damages, doesn't he have to take the money and technically fix the comet with that money?

That case epidimizes(SP?) frivolous. Next thing you know people will be suing each other for SUSPECTING character defaming thoughts. I wish I had thought to sue NASA over something so horribly stupid as blowing a hole in a rock.

i shudder to think what would happen to the world if the russians got a million dollars. let alone 300 million.
even if there are some keys to existance to life in that comet. a small hole wouldnt hurt that much.
