Changing your IP in general
#1
My friend recently got banned from a forum for something his little brother posted. It was an IP ban and the stupid mod's wont lift it. My friend (who isn't that computer literate when it comes to doing this kind of shit) thinks he can change the way the forum identifies your IP.

He is saying theres a way in the Local Area Connection to make it so instead of having the site automatically obtain your IP that he can make it so he enters it in manually. I told him as far as I know, people who get IP banned with DSL/Cable don't come back, ever. But people with Dial-Up come back all the time. He, of course, has cable -_-

So is he rambling on about something that will work? Or is he just a hopeless case?

The only way to change your IP address when you have a cable/dsl modem is to get a new lease. If he has a router (which it sounds like he does...) then more then likly you will not be able to tell when the lease expires.

First thing I'd do to try to find the lease renewel time is to see if the cable modem will tell you. Type in the IP address into your browser (IE, Firefox): 192.168.100.1

This will normally connect you to the cable modem. Browse around there if that doesn't work. If you can, plug your cable modem into your computer's NIC and see what it says then. (Properties; Status on the connection in the Network Connections control area). Once you have the lease time be sure your cable modem is off during that time.

It MAY work simply restarting the cable modem. It all depends on your ISP, however. Technical Support may or may not allow these methods, but may do it upon request.

This is interesting. Apparently he had 3 connections set up, accessing only one. He just closed that one and opened up another one... genius =p

You can get programs that send a fake I.P address out to everyone you connect to sorry i dint have a link. I wonder what people use em for. Tongue

Well, it's not that hard to bypass an ip ban from a webpage. You can connect to a proxy server and use your browser that way. If you don't know how to do that, you can use an anonymizer, a program which will do that for you.

I have a dsl modem which all comps connect to, anyways webpages identifies the computers ip when logging or showing with a serverside script, atleast for me. If that is the case (if you use windows) you can release your ip with ipconfig /release and go to network connections tcp/ip settings and change it to something like "121.121.122.12" doesn't really matter and the subnet mask will automatically change to a value. When that is done save the settings and then you only need to change back to where it was from the beginning, obtain a new ip adress automatically, that will change your computers ip adress.
