How to Use Hero Editor FAQ
#61
Wurzil:

If you used the Hero Editor V0.80 Complete Intall version, then everything should be automatic. There should be no DLL files, or anything esle to worry about. HE V0.80 will automatically find the correct directory where you keep your character files. Did you follow the installation instructions for HE V0.80?

Quote:
Hero Editor V80 Installation Options

FIRST: READ THESE Dos and Don'ts

1) Hero Editor usually requires that you are using an English version of Windows and your computer is set for single byte letters/Unicode, NOT multiple byte letters/Unicode. (NOTE: I have never had this problem, but others tell me this solved the problem for them.) From your Control Panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel) run Regional Settings, look for something about Unicode. Make sure the Unicode setting is for single bytes. Then make sure you have the language setting for English.

2) If you are using Windows 2000, NT, or XP, then make sure you have Administrator rights when you install Hero Editor. If you are the only user of your computer, then probably already have Administrator rights.

3) If you left click on an item picture and the mouse cursor jumps to the bottom right of the screen, then go into the Options tab and in Option (5) "WinXP Mouse Jump Correction", select "Disable Mouse Centering".

4) If pictures don't seem to line up properly, you probably need to set your screen to use Small Fonts.

5) If you have a firewall (such as the WinXP built-in firewall), make sure you don't block downloads from this site, or your download file will have 0 bytes.

6) After you have installed and started Hero Editor, press and release the F1 key, and a Help file will pop up that will give you a description about how to use some of the features of Hero Editor.

SECOND: Known Bugs in Hero Editor V0.8: (see V0.82 below*)

1) Corpses are not recovered properly from a character file. Go into a game and recover corpses before trying to open the character in Hero Editor.

2*) Set names are not displayed when you "mouse-over" V1.10 Set items.

3*) When Item Attributes "Other" is selected, if you right-click on the "Other Stuff" window to the right side, "Base Sockets" and "Quantity" selection are mixed up.

(* fixed in Hero Editor V0.81, see below)

THIRD: Where do you get Hero Editor?

Download the ZIP file into a new directory. UNZIP it. There should be three files ("setup.lst", "setup.exe", "Hero Editor.CAB"). Run (double click) the"setup.exe" file (or just "setup", if you have known file extensions hidden), and follow the directions (Click on the big button, on the left side). BTW, if a message comes up re "Version Conflict", answer yes (to keep the newer file that you already have).

Hero Editor is used to edit the Single Player character files (*.d2s) stored in your D2 Save directory (typically C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Save). These Single Player character files are also used for Open B.Net and TCP/IP games.

Hero Editor can NOT be used to edit your Closed B.Net character files, which are stored on B.Net computers. In fact it is illegal to even try to hack into the B.Net computers.

[QUOTE=ZonFire99]If you get errors about bad Stats when you try to load a character, this is usually caused by one of two things:

1) You have got your computer set to use multiple byte Unicode for letters/chars.
=> You need to Start > Settings > Control Panel, and run Regional Settings. Look for something about Unicode, and make sure your computer uses only single bytes for all Unicode. You may also need to set your computer for English language.

Ok I downloaded the program but whenever i try to load a char it gives me sumthing about the filesize too small. I checked the control panel and regional settings like u said, but i didnt see anything about being able to adjust the unicode:mad:. Please help!

ZonFire99 Wrote:Hm.. Hero Editor has nothing to do with Frontpage -- I don't even know what Frontpage is, lol. You definately should not need to install Frontpage to use Hero Editor. You may somehow have a "bad" copy of Hero Editor. Did you install any other software on your computer recently?

Hero Editor is a stand-alone program, so you can actually have several copies on your computer in different directories, and run any one of them. I am not sure if you can run more than one at a time (I am not sure how they share the DLLs). So yes, your should be able to start Hero Editor by double clicking on the EXE file (icon). I actually have all versions of Hero Editor that I have developed, all in different directories, so when a question arises about a specific version, I can run that particular version.

my hero edit wont work it keeps on saying componet tabctl32.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly regestered what do i do

I've run into one problem that I haven't seen posted here on the boards, and was wondering if anyone has run into this problem as well as me.

I opened the d2s file fine, but when I tried to save it went all wacko, like was telling me to make sure the file wasn't read only, or if the name was 'legal' and I know it is, because I made the charectar in game, saved then opened it in HE.

Alright, I have two quick questions regarding Hero Editor:

1.) What is the difference between v.80 and v.82?

2.) (This is sort of a general question, not just concerning Hero Editor) Is there any way for me to change skills? For example, make it possible that a Necromancer's revives will last indefinitely?

Yeah, I've run into that problem too.

I've just made a Druid helm and when I try to save the character file a message comes up saying:
"Problems encountered when trying to Save Character to a file. Make sure file is not Read Only, and the Character name is 'legal'. Error Location: 22 File Size: 1154"

Can anyone tell me how to solve this?

Oh, nevermind. I fixed it.

I notice that when I took a 6 socket ethereal Beserker Axe, and the 6 runes for BoTD into the SP game loaded from the Editor, I could manually put them in, and it would make the runeword for me, stats all perfect and such. I then saved, quit, and loaded up the editor with that BoTD in my inventory. It was all set up perfectly, and I could export the item to a file, which I did.

I'd like to be able to do this for any runeword, and I don't think there'd be much of a problem. The only thing is, is that when I want to use something that doesn't use the maximum number of sockets available, it doesn't work. i.e. you can't make a 5 socket Beserker Axe on the editor.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can easily get a 3 socket armor, for example, rather than a 4 socket, or a 5 socket weapon, instead of a 6. Thanks.
