[Discussion] ~ Windows Vista
#1
Okay, in order to facilitate the discussion of the up and coming Windows Vista, even though its been in the know for months now, I am creating this discussion thread.

In this thread feel free to post ANY and ALL worries, concerns, news and/or questions regarding Windows Vista.

All posts that are simply spam such as "Vista will kick ***!" and the like will be deleted and the poster warned. This is for INTELLIGENT discussion NOT praise and/or flaming of Microsoft/Windows.

Thank you and enjoy.

After looking at a few SS's it looks like XP but the way they talk it's more like OS X... And OS X, at first, was very hard for me to get... And everyone keeps talking about needing a top of the line computer, I just hope it doesn't need to be extremely good. And then there's the whole thing of spending another 200 bucks to get god knows what as far as upgrades...

I doubt you need a top computer.

For example, a Radeon 9200, 512 Ram, and a 2.0 Ghz processor should be plenty.

That's (for most people) a computer that would be from within the last year or so, and since most people go several years without getting a new PC (my parents have 384MB of RAM, a 1.0GHZ Thunderbird, some really old GeForce), a decent number of people are going to have to upgrade if they want to run Vista.

As for my personal thoughts about Vista, the only positive thing I can find in it is that is should help drive people to make more 64 bit apps. Other than that, the interface looks very similiar to OSX, and a lot of the features it was orignally planned to have (when it was first mentioned a yaer+ ago) have been scrapped; and supossidly the ones that remain will be available as Service Packs for XP. I don't know how good WinFS is going to be, but as far as being fragmentation free, well Linux has had that down for a while. But the biggest complaint I have about XP (and unfortunately will continue to have about Vista) is the registry system, and the way programs are installed. It's pretty hard to regularly use a Windows machine for over a year without corrupting the registry, sometimes to the point of having to reformat (ever run a registry error checking program? if not I suggest you do; you'll be shocked at teh number of errors which accumulate). As for installing programs, it's pretty hard to get ride of them completely without using a third party software; otherwise .DLLs, reg entries, and other crap gets scattered throughout your hard drive and won't be removed with a normal uninstall. Some programs will delete these, but not all.

That's just my (long) rant.

I'm sure they will keep updating Win XP. You can still get security patches for win 9x, and 2000 even had some recent updates in a post sp4 of sorts, but I'm sure M$ will do everything they can to get you to upgrade.

From what I have seen its mostly eye candy ripped off from other people. Most of the features they are adding can be found in Linux/OS X. As someone else said, it will really usher in the 64 bit processind and that is what I am waiting for right now.
