Man it all depends on your style. I like original sounding stuff too and I think someone that can do that instead of hack away fast taps and pulloffs is owed a great deal of respect as well. It takes a different type of talent to do that. Like this local band Neverset they got a cool sound. Check em out on myspace if you want to hear em.

As a texas man I like stevie alot but once again its blues. Easy. I give him props he put emotion into his playing but he got alot of Jimi's style in his playing. I like originality. But everyone has their on taste i guess.

it all depends on what u mean by best guitarist. some are faster than others, some are smoother than others, some are more creative to make this simple, there is no best guitarist because not 1 guitarist in this world has perfected speed, smoothness, creativity, and can play every single style of music that is thrown at him/her
My personal favs would be as follows:
1.Dimebag Darrell
2. Randy Rhoads
3. Michael Angelo
4. Jimmy Page
5. John Petrucci
6. Joe Satriani
7. Eric Johnson
8. Alexi "Wild Child"
9. Yngwie Malmsteen
10. Angus Young

I can honestly say after reading 1 page of this rubble, that the majority of this messageboard knows nothing of talent and/or good music, sorry if i seem alittle rude, but come on..... Zakk Wylde(sp) is ****ing horrible, Slipknot is a load of ****ing garbage and always has been, and don't get me started on half the other shit i read. I couldn't bare to read the 3 other pages of this thread.
Luke Jaeger in my opinion is one of the top 5 guitarists of all time, i'm sure none of you know who he is or what band he is in. Check them out, www.myspace.com/sleepterror
They used to just be an instrumental band, until they got some shitty screamer(they might have gotten rid of him by now). But whatever, he still shreds like no other.
oh and one other thing...
THE FALL OF TROY IS NOT ****ING HARDCORE.

vouch, mick thompson is cool, but i wouldnt rate him as a best guitarist, because theres nothing complicated about there riffs. they dont sound very creative either, if you have ever looked at there songs. There mostly made the same way just with 1 more power chord added, Zakk wylde is alright but the only thing that sets him apart is that he uses pinch harmonics like a bitch and it gets really annoying after a while. Zakk is still good but a great

I was hoping I wouldn't have to get into this.
First you need to look at the virtuosos...
Dime
Vai
Satriani
etc
All great players... household names to guitarists now.
Fantastic players
Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom, Sinergy)
Roope Latavala (Children of Bodom, Sinergy)
The Kokko brothers (Kalmah)
Michael Amott (Arch Enemy)
Jeff Loomis and Chris Broderick (Nevermore)
Zakk Wylde
Page
etc
Then there are the great people no one knows about...
Theodore Ziras
Other youtube players

I've never heard of him. He must suck.

Shred doesn't mean anything. A good friend told me this one -
"Townsend can say more in one note than most players could say in 10,000."
In other words, it doesn't matter if you can play fast or not. What matters is that you put real emotion into your music.

Omg this guy isn't so much rock but his skills blows anyone mentioned on here away. His name is Justin King and you have to give him much props for originality speed and just straight skill. I don't think any guitarist mentioned above could play this.

That's good, but not as good as Eric Mongrain.

No way that dude is ok but nothing like Justin King. This guy is good at harmonics and harmonizing himself with them. Look at some of Justins other stuff.

ok, u do realize that harmonics is only 1 technique out of around 20 and zakk wylde is good at harmonics but i wouldnt call him the greatest. just because someone is good at 1 technique doesnt mean anything. My sister is good at the slow and shit technique, should she be classified as a great guitarist?

Eric beats the hell out of King. Any idea how hard it is to pull off a natural harmonic like that, with one hand?

im not saying he is the best, but i love adrian smith from iron maiden.
while malmsteen is tallented and can play VERY fast, i think his shredding solos are completely devoid of emotion

Yeah but justin does it too but he does it on multiple strings at once. Eric does the air tap thing. I can do that, not in the same skill level as him , but I can produce a harmonic by slapping the string over the pick up. Try generating a 1 hand harmonic across the whole 12th fret. Its near impossible.
Oh and btw mushroom look at the video before you give imput on it. Its not just harmonics. Its playing 3 different melodies at the same time. The mere concept of playing 3 different things at the same time is mindblowing. And eric even plays his own drum beat along with his music on the body of the guitar.

Dime... Nuff said.
Out of new guys I would have to say those guys from Shadows Fall.

i did watch both videos of both guys, but i was saying that just cause hes good at harmonics doesnt mean anything, or good at harmonizing. thats all there was to my post, there both good at what they do but i still think eric is better than king, because eric's playing was a bit more impressive than king, and watch the 2 other vids by king on the youtube page
