I am sure, my dad showed me it, I was looking for a computer and he showed me how to build one a good sites to order from, tigerdirect.com has it's own magazine brochures, I think you can get them at Fry's, egg.com is good too, just no magazine brochures, you have to go to their site and look at what they have. 1 week-1 month shipping, longest I have had was 2 weeks, they are great sites.

Get an AMD 4.0 or something+ I haven't worked on my computer in a while, get one of the higher end AMDs.

The core requirements for my current machine (mobo, case, PSU[the psu with the case died], ram, and harddrive) cost me right at 280$, 300ish with shipping and all totaled.

I now have ordered a 6600GT and another HD, but regardless.. for 280$, my computer flew.
For the price you would pay for a midrange brand computer you could build it up easily just as good (but guaranteed better) cheaper.

Everything surrounds your MOBO. First, search up motherboards and pick one you like. Personally, I would get a 939pin AMD 64 processor with PCI Express x16 (for the most up to date AMDs and video cards) and maybe a chipset.

Then, you go from there. Buy a case and PSU (I reccomend Aspire PSU's. Very fast and reliable, cheap too) that surrounds your Mobo choice. Make sure, for instance, you buy a socket 939 AMD 64bit processor that your motherboard supports. Make sure you buy a case that will have room for both your Mobo and PSU (and also make sure you buy a case that supports the size/shape of your mobo. Ex: MicroATX mobos with MicroATX or regular ATX case.)

Buy the ram that is compatable with your Mobo also.

Hard drive and dvd/floppy drives are variable; buy whatever you want for whatever you want to spend. WHen the chosen parts come to your door (please ask if you don't know; would be a shame to see you waste money on parts that don't work together) follow the Mobo instruction manual to mount your motherboard to the Case, attatch processor/processor heat sink, install all the power and whatnot, etc.

Have fun, mamke sure you ask before you buy if ya' ain't sure

newegg.com is very good. ive shopped from them before. also amazon.com is good. free shipping on anything above 25$ Smile.
let me translate some stuff that xDBD said that you might not understand
MOBO= motherboard
PSU= power supply unit
also, about some other stuff. the RAM is essential. get one gigabyte of it. corsair's value select is pretty good. plus under 80$ i think.
now for your video card. there are hundreds of different ones out there today. try to narrow your choices down by thinking of what you are going to be doing. if you plan to just play d2 and other games like it, get one that is 128 megabytes big. it should cost you no more than 100$ for a decent video card. if you are a hard core gamer and like to have everything on maxium settings, then we are talknig about 200$ + price range.

more about the motherboards. also decide on what you are going to do with your comper. if it is for everyday use, choose one that only has one video card socket, other wise known as PCI Express 16. if you want to be hard core, then choose a mother board that has dual PCI Express 16. this way if you want, you can have two video cards running at once.
also make sure that your mother board socket(the number of pins it will accept for your CPU) matches. other than that there really isnt much to worry about
hard drive- it all depends again too. these are getting cheaper and cheaper these days. try to get one that is at least 100GBs big. if you want to download alot of movies etc etc then choose a bigger size.

About HDs, I reccomend maybe a 40gig for all games and applications and operating system, while having one or two 100-200 gig hds on standby for media alone.

Assuming you, like most people, like to download music and whatnot. With a seperate HD for apps and games, you can format your drive for whatever reason and never worry about losing media

wow.. Thanks guys.. I really appreciate all your help.

I plan to use it basically for the normal, everyday stuff.. games (cs,sc,d2,Wow) downloading, ps.. Just all the basic things.. I think i'll try to stay away from all the hardcore stuff too. I won't be getting anything for around 2 weeks at least.. So i got some time to think about it.

I would still like some input on your opinions and stuff.. Thanks again.

go with a nvidia card...at least thats my opinion. i think nvidia's nview is alot more user friendly and...well...better than ati's catylist. a 6600 or 6200 would do just fine for what u seem to be thinkin about doin, even a 5700 would work fine, but if u want to be able to play some games that are a little newer, then u should go with the 6200 or better cause the 5700 chipset or whatever isnt supported by newer games (damn bf2)

I myself got a new custom made computer this year, and recently i bought a few things from tiger direct for it. thing about a new computer is you can use your old computer parts in it too, like your hardrive. If you plan on downloading a lot of music, like I do... then get a new hardrive, but if you're not big on illegally downloading then a 35-40 gig hardrive, or even 2 different hardrives from old computers, and they should work fine, and there is about 50$ off your bill anyways. ehhhhh i bought a DVD writer and a mic and a headset, but anyways... things i suggest, not for chips, but just for your "semi-gaming" computer, I'd say get a mic, for most first person shooter games, get some headphones, get a dvd writer, because you can just save so much information on a dvd drive ( i got mine on tigerdirect for 40$, and 50 dvd-r's for 10$ + S&H) and another drive, probrably a cd-rw drive. you're gonna want a nice graphics card, i have a 256 radeon (forgot other specifics) and a 2.8 ghz pentium 4 chip with hyper a hyperthreading chip, and an intel made motherboard, which makes everything fit together, only 528mb ram though. anyways, it's a nice quick computer and it fits all games ive played have run well, im not saying to buy a computer like mine, im just saying... i don't know what im sayting, im just rambling cause im bored and watching T.v.

custom is definitely the way to go. i've built so many for different people and they love it. just have the software to backup the hardware.
