check out my attemps at being a musician on the Music Talent Showoff forum lol. Some of my stuff is really weird metal styles, but most of the people in there like techno, so i posted some of that up too.
http://www.blizzsector.co/graphics-art/2...owoff.html
if you like really heavy stuff check out: The Locust, The Berzerker, or Cryptopsy.
Try: Berzum, Carpathian Forest, or Cradle of Filth for a more "Black Metal" sound.
Amon Amarth has extremely catchy guitar riffs. An*l C*nt has funny lyrics over really heavy music. Kinda hardcore punk thrash sound.
Search for BoneBasket on futureskully records. Its a band i used to be in up in ohio. they are like NIN type industrial.

google "New Wave of American Heavy Metal"
i'm not a fan of all of it, but it's all very technical and heavy shit. key bands would probably be lamb of god, shadows fall, trivium, killswitch engage(even though I hate heartache), slipknot..
alas, get into the classics, but i'm sure you have already. you know, the whole black sabbath scene, metallica, anthrax, testament, megadeth, and my probably favorite bay area thrash band... yeah, exodus. lumped in this category should also be Alice in Chains, simply because they own and this is probably the only 'hard rock' paragraph thing i'm typing
also, google "shread" and get those artists. some key ones would be yngwie j. malmsteen, joe satriani, steve vai, jason becker, paul gilbert, john petrucci/dream theater.
i'm a big jam fan too, but it could be a biased view because of my habits. check out gov't mule, allman brothers, phish, derek trucks band, OAR/of a revolution.
this is a realllly generalized mainstream list, because i'm assuming the creater of the thread is a younger guy or new to the scene. if you download a cd from each of the artists i've listed i'm sure you'll find something to jam too.
oh and above all,
as a huge bodomite and opethian, download/buy/even steal if you have too every piece of Opeth or Children of Bodom material you can get. go see CoB live if you have the means, too. never seen opeth, though someday I hope too

Trivium is an awesome metal band. Probably my favorite. You should listen to them sometime.
Dane Cook is a really good comedian. He is the funniest comedian i have ever heard of.

I really tried hard to avoid this thread for fear of retards spouting off shit like "ZOMG FALLOUTBOY FTW!!! LAWL!"
Surprisingly, people have taste.
I'll reiterate what a few already said. Trivium. Hellacious band that rules balls. I saw them with In Flames in Chicago. It ruled. You should check In Flames out, too.
Roadrunner United has a few good songs. My favorite being In the Fire.
I've only listened to one Dimmu Borgir song but I'd imagine the rest are as good as Burn in Hell.
Children of Bodom is by far the best metal band with a keyboardist. If you disagree, refer to my sig'd statement.
Someone mentioned Amon Amarth. Hell yeah, bitches. Viking metal kicks ass.
Which reminds me. Arch Enemy. Their old stuff blows but since they got Angela. (yes, it's a girl, and she's totally doable *gasp*) They're from Germany and they kick many forms of ass.
If you're into any hardcore (which I'm not, I just like one hardcore band) you can check out As I Lay Dying. Even if you think they suck you can't deny the awesomeness that is their drummer.
If you want some really ****ing underground shit, http://www.myspace.com/deimosband
There you go. Some of my favorite bands right there. Check 'em out.

The only one I have heard and liked from that list is In Flames, I heard an acoustic medly by them and it was nice.
And don't flame people for musical taste, even if it might be emo. Different strokes for different folks.

It's all non-80's style metal. Death, black, thrash/speed metal stuff that you probably wouldn't like too much. Including In Flames, although they're the closest of those I listed to 80's style.

You absolutely have to listen to Opeth, I think that it is the most original and unique band out there...

I actually think that Arch Enemy is from Sweden...

Cradle are as black metal as my pet dog.
Seriously, They are the goth version of scenewhore.
And by the way Tool, Dimmu only covered burn in hell. The original was a twsited sister song.
Dimmu are allright, But listen to them long enough and you get sick of the predictable riffs and boring lyrics.

Oh shit, are you serious? I probably wouldn't like the Twisted Sister version as it is as I hate them and I hate Dee Snider even more.
[Edit] God damn Twisted Sister sucks. Their version is SOOOO boring.
