From what I saw off CNN, Pluto is indeed a planet, and would be known as a "pluton" along with its moon and possible new planet, Charon, and 2003 UB313 (nicknamed for now as "Xena"; may change if it does become a planet).

As for Ceres, wohoo.

I am pretty excited about this and hope the proposal does pass through.

wow i never heard about that. and no, there won't be any life on it. if its past pluto, image how cold it is.

edit: ofcourse plutos a planet!

yeah but one of them has a really wierd orbit and i forgot to ask oe of my teachers if its possible that the new planets can orbit into one of ours T_T... yeah but did they also find some fossil with organism on it? like from mars i think that was on the news also well if they found life on mars hell in a few thousand years that will be new earth its close enough basicly....
but im also wondering why did they deside to add them... will it benifit us in some sort of way or just for the hell of it?

why did who decide to add what? be specific.

if you're talking about the planets, they added them because they ARE planets. no other reasons to benifit us besides knowledge. planets=giant masses of matter than orbit around the sun. who don't "add them". if they're planets, they're planets. if not, then they're not.

Perhaps they want to add them because if it's there and it can be identified as a planet, why wouldn't you give it the right to call it a planet? (or to annoy kids learning astronomy to learn 3 new planets).

Regardless of how cold it is, I'd go with the possible idea of life. Creatures can evolve with natural selection to adapt to different environments, and in this case they'd evolve to survive the cold.

yes but life does require some heat.

what i was trying to say was why did us EARTH or w/e deside to add these new discovered things orbiting around us... and why didnt we ever see them before... or did we? and if so why didnt no1 say anything back then?!

...... thx for the input mathalamus........

hellsing293 not all things require heat to grow, there are organisms living deep within the artic that are perfectly happy without heat.
also, the addition was PROPOSED, as the second link that jedimaster86 posted says

ok if you want to talk about heat in terms of that, fine. the artic is way "hotter" than Xena. the point remains the same. i believe that some extreme organisms can survive that harsh enviroment on Xena regardless of heat. maybe all they need are carbon compounds to survive and frozen water

Additional Comment:
but anyhow, the addition of more planets is just a proposal right now, as both the CNN and BBC articles ilustraight

lawl roffle Mob. Divine, by the time they decide it IS a planet AND put it in textbooks, you will probably be dead, so don't worry about it.

I think all of you are misunderstanding this "adding new planet" idea. Scientists have been considering adding planets to our solar system. Just as someone else pointed out earlier, planets are planets. We can only discover them, and we've discovered a lot of other planets outside our solar system. The point is that a planet doesn't necessarily have to orbit our sun to exist, but it must do so in order to be considered part of our solar system.

whats the big deal? there are countless numbers of planets in the universe. i bet if i pointed in a random spot in space if i looked far enough there would be a planet, i might have to look a few million light years away, but i would eventually find one.
