high paying computer-related jobs?
#1
i think i've decided that i want to pursue a career in computers, but i'm not sure. basicly, i want to have a job that pays highly. are they're any really high paying computer-related jobs out there possible to get? because my school offers career classes involving computers(one is graphics for you ps fans) and since i'm in high classes my junior/senior years i can take extra electives etc for career classes. now just like name the job, what you basicly do, par, and what you actually do. real life comp ppl would be cool tooBig Grin

First take buisness computers, this will give you very indept knowledge of Word and Excell (and maybe powerpoint)

High-paying jobs usually are in the R&D department, like hardware/software development. But you have to be a computer wiz and right now such jobs are very competitive.

There aren't as many high-paying computer jobs as there were several years ago, as computer skills are becoming common among everyone nowadays.

Take classes for EasyCAD or 3dCad, which are heavily used in architechure (butched the spelling I know). 3d Cad is hard and it sucks but once you have it down and are good at it finding a job should not be so hard. Honestly if you are doing something you truly enjoy and are good at the money will come..

Really what do you wish to do in computers? You could be anything from a graphics designer to a server admin to a hardware developer to network instillations...

I'm looking forward to IT work myself, it's roughly 75,000-100,000 a year and I believe usually starts around 40-60k a year. It's not a lot of money, my dad makes about 60-70k a year and we're pretty well off. But it involves stuff I enjoy so I don't give a shit.

Additional Comment:
Oh, IT is basically troubleshooting computers for people. I was also kind of thinking about opening a computer business of sorts at some point. I don't now, we'll see how shit goes down.

I have a hard time believing your father nets 60k on an IT job.

Maybe half that, maybe. What's his hourly? or is he paid on a salary?

I do know those over-the-phone helplines do pay more then most jobs, simply becuase I don't think anyone want's to sit behind a computer screen and answer the phone all day. I have several friends that work at a Direct-TV call center who absolutely hate thier jobs but the only thing that keeps them there is the money they make.

Majors in order of starting pay IMO:

1. Computer Engineering
2. Computer Science
3. Business Information System Management (I'm in the third year of the program at Sac State)
4. Certifications (Cisco CCNP, CCIE and security certs) and maybe some of the Microsoft certs.

In Cali, 60k a year is common for an IT job with a degree or certifications and experience.

@A.D. he's not an IT guy. He's an electrician. I was using his job as a comparison as to how I will be living in my adult life.

The way I started was I freelanced for small local companies building, administrating and updating there websites. The that lead to getting more certs. than just web design. I actually got one company to pay for my classes. ha! Then this lead into a merge with my promoting business. Now I can do anything from getting Viva La Bam into a club or to show up at an event; to making illustrations in advertising for clubs and businesses. Meanwhile, I still have a couple websites freelance which amount to about $400/week each not counting the promotions and advertising. Not to talk down college, but I never finished yet. So this one was all me. You can take that to a different level depending on what you like to do.

NOTE: That is just how I did it, and if your great at meeting and talking to others, while being able to adapt to others needs and wants then you can simply do what I did. *-gotta be a talker though-* = smile alot

Yea you need to be a exceptional programmer... also the best would be to become a IT manager within a big company which probably make you the most money but for that you need a good degree and about 7 years experience to become head IT Manager.

ok, one thing lol(don't laugh). whats IT stand for?

and i thought about making some freelance sites and making money as a side.

IT = Information Technology (basically the use of technology and computer systems to organize information electronically)

To become a computer engineer, you have to meet the pre-requisites for that program and from what I can remember, it is very rigorous to say the least. My roommate graduated from UCSD last year with a environmental engineering degree and just to get in the program he had to take Calculus 1 & 2, physics, chemistry, and some more math like linear algebra and the like. You will need to have a thorough understanding of algorithms too. It is a very tough degree and that is why I chose the Information System route (basically the same as IT). One other thing, if you don't have any programming experience, I would recommend trying it first because there is no way in hell I could sit at a desk all day and program code. Plus, a lot of the programming jobs are being outsourced overseas where labor is much cheaper.

well since i'm in high classes, i'll be able to take classes like calc, chemistry etc. idk, if programmer is more money i'd go for that. i'd still probably be able to free-lance making websites and such.

and making my own programs would be pretty cool too.

game development has been making good money and if you can get a royalty from a creation that pretty much banks even more. If you have a broad computer company in your town, try through them. I currently work through a local one and all i do is answer phones and fix problems people are having with their computers. sometimes they bring it in, sometimes i do a housecall. I get around 2k a week. It gets cut to about 1600 after taxes but its still a good amount for just 1 week of work on multiple computers. you can also work away from computers and work in a hospital as a medical records assistant. they make 1-2k bi-weekly plus a life savings. If you add 100, the hospital will add 200. i have a sister that works in one and she has life insurance from the hospital of 540k and a savings of 24k. just remember computers alone shortens your choices while computers and computer related jobs will give you a bigger choice in jobs.

Check out positions at Dice.com. Lots of openings there. The biggest money makers I know work on contracts with companies as Project Managers with database backgrounds.
