harddrive dying while on computer...
#1
well i was using the computer, turned off the monitor left it on because i was gonna go back on in a little while and was too lazy to go to standby. so, i get back on it and it's frozen. ok no big deal. i manually turn it off(button) and then turn it back on. Error, "cannot find hard disks". i'm like "oh shit" and try it again. same thing. I tried to reformatt and it said "no hard disks found". so, i call someone in the phonebook. they tell me "its probably something inside you computer thats borken.". so i take it to a local store and they tell me my harddrive is bad and charged a $100 diagnostic and labor fee. So i buy an 80gig IDE drive for about $70 bring it there and they put it in. So, out of a freak accident i lost $180. but, my old harddrive was wayyy outdated(18gig lol) so atleast i got a better harddrive out of it. kinda sucks having to redownload all my stuff again lol.

if you hadn't noticed(which you probably didn't) this is why i was not here for a while.

your harddrive was fine. You were just virused by a self destructing worm that has been passing through dsl services. Verizon has had customers with a similar situation. Even my cousins HP was hit by it. you can still use it as a slave. just set it as slave and let it load. windows will notice the corrupted parts and truncate/repair the missing or destroyed files and it will work as good as new. I hope they partitioned your harddrive for you, having 80 large on an older computer will slow it down heavily since it will put stress on your processor.

i don't have dsl, i have cox(different?) and about partioning my harddrive, what does that mean and how will i know if they didn't do it(my computer speed running fine). and if so, can't i just buy a new processor? and i already paid them so oh well. i could use a processor upgrade too.

btw, is it true that athlon is just as good as intel pentium and intel is jsut a higher end version?

cox supports dsl and cable. chances are their feeds are intertwined.partitioning a drive is basically making other drives onto 1 drive. like with a 100 gig on an hp is usually partitioned 10gigs for recovery and the rest for normal. new processor could work if the computer was custom built by no company. most common companies hardcode/wire thier components so they cant upgrade the main components.yea. athlon is as good as intel and intel is justa higher end/priced processor. the highest on the market is thier duo but that should be changing after october when amd releases their new processor if they stay on track. i got to see a promo of it in seattle. Makes duo look stupid.

no you wouldnt.. certain parts like processors need diff motherboards to supports it.. I.E. a 6 year old computer cant fit or use a newer Amd 4400 or 4800 64x chip. also other parts are intergrated or not .. like a video card may have a AGP slot or a PCI slot..

More or less computers are like cars.. somre have v8's some have v6's so more over a differnt setup is used for different application... workload like CAD or multimedia to a basic computer for wordperfect and simple internet browsing..

computers like dell, hp, compaq, e-machines,etc have some parts hardcoded on serial number so you cant change processors without flashing it. and they dont have the jumper capability 90% of the time so flashing it wont do any good. I'd stick with built piece by piece computers since they have a selection of processors to use for different motherboards. The newer motherboards have more support modules on it and have thicker pipelines to feed from so they process a bit more cleaner anyways.

so what, would i take all the parts on my computer and put them in a new motherboard(or someting like that). and by me, i mean someone paid to do it lol.

yes thats the main idea.. piece the parts you have and use all you can or want to in order to save money on parts cost... tiger Direct has a barebone system with motherboard, processor,HD, and i think an intergrated sound/vid card for about $550 with decent stats on it. Never pay more than $1k for a computer... if u desire the best just wait 6 months when the updated technology comes out and buy what u wanted at half cost.. Supply and demand will work in your favor.. i have a system thats 5 years old and yea im looking for something newer myself.. and trying to do it as cheap as possible and without wasting the extra parts i put into my pc after i got it.. i.e. sound card, vid card, cd burner.

Also if you tell me your price range i'd be more than happy to look for you as im looking for myself in a consolidated effort..

if its tiger direct, wait till the last week of a month. they have closeout sales around then. Thats how i got some good deals on some parts. I spent like 200 on 3 ati x700 video cards lol. i'm about 2 short from upgrading the LAN computers in the basement for coop play of halo 2. i still have 3 months to go anyways before they update thier servers to allow xbox and pc play for halo 2. Their new barebone kits are supposed to be out october 27th. i'm waiting on those cause the diablo company is supposed to be releasing a new SLI gaming barebone kit which i've had my eye on since they sent me a newsletter. figured i'd get 2-3 of those and sell them for good cash in my town. if you plan on having a computer built and want to still use an nvidia videocard, get a motherboard with a high crossfire option (around 120-200 crossfire). It gives nvidia parts a cleaner feed since they are made of the same materials.
