I dont think so Invis, my friend tried to upgrade wizardspike gloves and they poofed on him so no i'm pretty much certain it doesn't work.

well you could just sell it and buy it back from akara...it works 100% of the time with runes. dunno if it will disappear on you though
Selling your imps are only a temp perm method and I am not for sure that they will be there when you try to buy them back. I have had many items that I have sold not be there when I try to buy em back. As far as upping imps to make em perm, I dont know if this will make em perm or not. I do know that when you up armor of any kind (boots helms gloves armor) only the def changes. So no worries about the stats changing on you.

i think they would. no, they won't lose thier stats they will become better. you should up them anyways for more value.
