I am using D2-LOD 1.10 with Hero Editor 0.82 and all my characters are updated. When I try to open a character file, I get an error message saying it can't open character files and to make sure they are under 32K. They are all around 2K.
What da dillio?!?!?
Ok, so I got home and removed Diablo II and reinstalled everything again. It STILL won't work! Somebody HAS to have some kind of info about this?

hmmm, do you have all your .dll files downloaded and installed in the right folder?
Is there any extra files I'm supposed to have downloaded other than the editor????

make sure you still have all the original hero editor v0.80 files. they are necessary to run v0.82
Yup I've done that too. This is what it says when I try to open a character file...
"This editor supports only Diablo II NOX and LOD version 1.09 and 1.10. Please update your version of Diablo II ( just login to Blizzard site). Then open and save your "old" characters."
All of my characters were created in LOD 1.10. Nothing I try is working.

maybe your characters are equipped with 09 or lower items.
or go to options and change the level of warning measures.

Warning messages are disabled already. I still get the above error message. Like I said, all my characters were created under LOD with 1.10 so the weapons should all be ok. It's the wierdest thing!!!

Try making a new character (like right now) and opening it with the editor. Since you re-installed d2 it should work.
I'll have to try that when I get home. I did create a new Barb two days ago and it won't open either.
Ok. I tried creating a new Barb as a test with no items at all. I could open it. So why can't I open all the others that I have??? How can I fix this?
I figured it out! I had a thinker. I went into Diablo II and took off all of the items I was wearing and THEN I could open the character!
Oooops. Don't know why the above message parsed together.

TOLD YOU!!! LoL, your old characters were somehow equipped with 09 or lower version items, which cause problems for hero editor v0.8-v0.82

Hero Editor will only open V1.09D, V1.10s beta, and V1.10 final patch character files.
If you have a character file from a patch prior to V1.09D, then you must update your character files to a newer patch before you can edit them in Hero Editor. To do this, do the following:
1) Make sure your D2 game is updated. (Login to Battle.Net and your D2 game will automatically get updated.)
2) Make sure that all of your character files are updated. (Start a D2 Single Player game, and load then exit/save each of your character files. This will update your character files and items.)
3) Then you should be able to edit your character files in Hero Editor.
Enjoy.

If you can load 1.09D characters why can't you load 1.09 items???

If you open a V1.09D character file, then you can import V1.09D items (but not V1.10 items).
If you open a V1.10 character file, then you can import V1.10 items (but not V1.09D items).
There are a few exceptions, but generally, you can not mix items from different D2 game patches. In fact, I highly recommend that you keep your V1.09D items in a different directory from your V1.10 items.
And further more to my found solution, the actual items that appear to be causing the issues are the uniques. If I take them off, I can open their files.
