Really you shouldn't even change it, rather should leave it on default setting.

it should stay on default unless you are using touchscreen or dual screens with seperate settings, if its that, you'd need about 64mb for each screen with a 96 cache as its minimum settings. but most ppl wont unless they are using wide screen vgas or something like a dongled pci-x.

Also, the only other time you should even consider messing with your virtual memory, is if you are reconfiguring for a cetain game And you know what you are doing. Other than that, leave your settings on default.

Some people don't even know what virtual memory is. And the more virtual memory, the more it saves from games and such. Like a bigger cache.

Stuff like that, mainly it is a graphic compasity. It makes the games look better, but because it is holding more graphic resolution. If you set it to high, you will not be able to play or even view anything on your moniter because your RAM can't process all of those graphics at a rate that will enable you to play. Which is why it is better left on default unless you really know what you're doing.

You would have to buy like an alienware in order for you to move your virtual memory even close to the max. I wouldn't advise experimenting with it. Can cause serious problems and then you have to get your cpu reprogrammed, or maybe a new monitor.

i have between 1-2gigs set aside for virtual memory, and the recommended is 700, and it hasnt done any harm to my computer.. you can set aside as much as you want, as long as it doesnt interfere with your hard drive

Set the virtual memory size to 2x your ram if you have gig+ or 3x if you have less than a gig and allow that space to be allocated earlier, that reduces disc usage therefore makingyour pc faster.

i keep forgetting ppl still use stock boards...lol. for stock boards keep it around 1gig for 256mb ram (if its ddr). for anything higher for like 1 gig ram 2-2.5 should be perfect for it. as for windows ME, 64-96 should be fine. windows xp usually requires about 512 but runs best at 1.75 if the ram is about 512. some of the newer ones can be calculated by total memory x 2.125

You are lucky that there are so many people that know about this stuff.
