Sony doubles cost of PlayStation
#1
PLAYSTATION fans, stand by to be milked: Sony expects you to hand over $1000 for its new console, more than 50 per cent more than Japanese gamers are paying.

If it is any consolation, you'll get 5c change when, from March23, Sony Computer Entertainment's long-awaited 60-gigabyte PlayStation 3 goes on sale in Australia, Europe and New Zealand.
Anyone hoping to save a few dollars on Sony's lower-spec 20Gb model had better hunker down for an even longer wait, because a Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman would only say yesterday that it would start arriving "later this year, depending on demand".
In Japan and the US, where the gaming console went on sale in November, the 60Gb model's recommended price is $US599 or Y59,980. At yesterday's exchange rate, Australians will be paying Y94,095.
Sony's Australian retailers, nervously watching Nintendo Wii consoles marching out the door at $399 since December and the older Microsoft Xbox 360 still selling solidly, will be wondering how families, in particular, respond to a $999.95 console.
Sony spokesman Adrian Christie said that while the PS3 was dearer than its competition, it offered features beyond its ability to play games, including a high-definition Blu-ray DVD.
"For the product offering, assessed by features, I don't think it's a high price," he said.

Really the Ps3 doesn't cost any more than regular blu-ray players, the problem is nobody buys that crap because its too expensive in the first place. Sony ****ed up and technology costs are WAY to high right now. $700 bucks to watch a movie that might have a couple extra features or be slightly prettier? Yeah right.

They are just having a format war, Sony is trying their best to get Bluray to win it by paying companies to exclusively release their movies only for Bluray. Last time there was a big format war Sony lost, with VHS being the winner, costing them god knows how much. I think the video game industry is about to lose their ex-leader.

I'm sure in 5-10 years blu-ray will be used more often, dvd players cost alot when they came out too. For now though, it is just too pricey.

Blu-Ray is a superior technology it just costs too damned much. Sony is going to lose this because of the cost the make Blu-Ray and and the price their asking for when HD-DVD is a far more affordable format.

**** that, that's such a rip-off, I hope they noticed a low sales pitch for the PS3, and realize enough people just aren't going to buy the console. But for now, im sticking to good ol' emulators and ripped iso games smartass2, so I might as well wait till someone develops PS3 emulation, ( and the gamecube im still awaiting for zzz)

PS3 emulation will not happen for god knows how long, computers are just not powerful enough to do it. Hell computers have trouble emulating regular xbox.

Computer technology is plenty powerful, just the majority of computers that people have are not powerful enough.

I dont think its right to up the price even more because sony will adventually find out that they wont sell nearly as much. Right now i would go buy an Xbox360 just because its a hell of a lot cheaper. I mean who cares if the graphics are under the ps3 big deal. I still like Nes games and there 8-bit lol. And as far as the blu-ray goes as fykins said. Idc about watching a movie where i see more detail like shinier glass. So i think sony kinda blew themselves up on this deal

i think that sony is taking into account the different currency rates when they released the price for the ps3 in Australia. but still, that is grossly over priced

Although the ps3 can make better looking games it will take a while before its top games look better than the Xbox360's top games; due to 360 being out for a year before.

Give up Sony, your sunk this generation. Paint the ps2's a new color and sell those for the next 5 years.
