Q about wireless routers

How can I tell if someone is "leeching" my connection? More importantly, how would I block others from it?

To help protect your Network, I would say you should encrypt it, and also have it password protected. If you type your IP address into your address bar, your router's configuration settings should pop up. If it asks for a default admin username and password, the username is usually admin, and the password field left blank.

There should also be some security wizards on that page that can help you through protecting and securing your wireless network.

In my router I have a list of the only acceptable MAC addresses. As far as I know this is good enough. I am sure there is better way to protect yourself and one of the more informed here can help. I do know that there is a way to see who is on your connection though I personally don't know how to do that either.

if your router light is flashing, and you are offline. I remember seeing a download where if other people went on the internet using your router, all of their icons turned to kittens, they type in a site, it goes to kitten sites, it was all kittens.

in your router settings, there usually is a log of all the website that you access in a day. clear the log, and dont access any websites. see if the log gets filled up with sites. also, on the log it will display computer ip address that try to acces your router.

type in ur browser 192.168.1.1 and enter your password, open the status tab and then the local network tab. Look for a button called DHCP client table, itll have everyone whos every connecetd

Try getting Angry IP. Its a free ware that shows you who and what is connected. With your firewall, you can block who can and cannot connect in detail...If you are new to firewalls or just don't like to work with complicated ones, you can choose from using one on an internet security package or just black ice firewall. If it's black ice, you can set it to paranoid and that pretty much blocks anything you haven't listed as acceptable/trusting.
