Port Connectivity

As some of you guys may know already, I'm in search of a new laptop for college. So I'm just researching on some of the features/requirments people been telling me and I've come across a few that show this..

[/SIZE]I don't really understand the 56kbps part. My internet at home is through cable, does that mean I can't hook it up to this particular laptop? Also, my college does offer wifi services so will this be compatible? I see it has some Wireless LAN thing lol, but don't know if it is the same thing, I usually ask the seller about if it has wifi built in so I guess I'll usually get my answer from them.

was lan is the same as wifi. wifi is just wireless internet. if the 56kps port is an ethernet port then yes you can use wired internet as well.

the first one is the dial up modem speed.. you shouldn't have to worry about that one too much since you already got high speed.. which would connect to the Ethernet (which is mentioned in the second line)

The wireless LAN is your Wifi card.. its the same thing basically..

i dont know why they must include that with all computers now adays. no one uses 56k anymore. you would think that they would have gotten rid of that port.

there are still occasions where some people would need it.. althought very rare in this day and age.. still some locations that are in urban areas which arent serviced by broadband (or if they are, its by satellite.. which is quite costly)

Actually a good portion of america isn't covered by some sort of broadband. I've lived right outside town and had to use dial up.

802.11b/g is the wireless adapter inside the laptop. Useful for connecting to a wireless hot spot in your college. The modem is for directly connecting to internet. Such as via modem, or phone jack. However 56 kbps is extremely slow.

Considering of all major tech players.. US of A is one of the least covered and most expensive country with broadband.. heck.. Japan is rolling out a new service with fiber that includes 100mbs for 49$ a month.. and thats the LOWEST tier you can get

Too bad we live in America.

I have a download speed of 310 Kbps. Which is around 2.5 Mbps. Costing $24.

i currently have 600kbs (avergage. seen hitting 700) so about 5Mbs for 45$ canadian... that includes a long distance plan tho..

ya.. they are right now proposing wireless internet service for all of the houston area.. but i dont know how much they might charge for that..
galveston has something like that

I pay 55 bucks a month for cable but I can download at over 800kbs on a p2p with the right connections.
