Smite.... Melee or not melee?

So me and my good friend Kaze were arguing on bnet just now about it smiters are really melee characters. I say they aren't because they have no AR/DEF check and it's not fair in melee duel games that they stun true melee characters. If smite wasn't always hit but it still stunned it would be a melee skill IMO but since it is always hit it is not a melee skill. IMO Smiters should be utility characters not taken into duel games. Tell me what you think.

Smite is a melee skill.

Point #1-There are mainly three kinds of damage you can use on Diablo. One is a physical melee attack, a Spell, or a ranged attack. Smite is definately not a Spell, nor a ranged attack.

Point #2-An "Attack" uses a weapon of some type to calculate its damage, while a spell's damage is based entirely on skill level and skill damage modifiers. Smite for example, can use Grief's +damage to calculate the damage.

Point #3-The time it takes to perform attacks is typically decided by increased attack speed modifiers (IAS), while spells' casting speed is typically decided by faster cast rate modifiers (FCR). Smite can.
Point #4-Melee attacks return mana and life. Smite can.

Point #5-Crushing Blow and Open Wounds work at half-effectiveness with ranged attacks. Smite does not work at half-effectiveness.

Point #6-Melee attacks sets of procs. Lifetap on an Exile for instance. Non-Melee cannot.

You are looking at Ar/Def check way too harshly and just because of that one missing melee trait, you think its not melee. When however it is only one small exception.

Here are the things summed up supporting Smite is melee.

Smite is Melee
1. Uses +damage modifier/ Ed.
2. Uses increased attack speed.
3. Life leach. Mana leach. (In pvm)
4. Procs. Ex: Lifetap on exile etc.
5. Crushing Blow and Open Wounds

Smite is not Melee
1. no AR/DEF check
2. Not fair in duels? o_O.

I have no problem leveling. I remade my smiter yesterday. Then traded a noob 4 pcombs for Storch and 15% Light Cl Ormus. One had 8 life and one had 3 dex so I remade right after I just finished the smiter. I finished again today. Pm me about it.

Want to come in one of our games and see my gear? Its really pretty good already, it wouldn't require alot of Fg. laugh:

Another point you have made for me Kaze... Smite cannot be blocked. Melee attacks should be blockable. Smite is essentially a magic spell with different mechanics. So what it leechs? Your whole post makes the point that it is a spell with melee mechanics. It has no range but it acts as a melee attack but is essentially a casted spell because the only way to avoid it is dodge it... Example sorceress fireball.

You must of not read it careful enough. Your just stubborn. -_-.

There is only one exception for smite. And that is it is not blockable. Almost all the other aspect of smite does make it a melee attack. Diablo has many attacks that doesn't work based on ONE damage calculator, but that doesn't make it different. Smite would be underpowered if it was blockable.

any character that can get killed while doing hell chaos because of IM is definably melee.

i would like to see you try and smite anything after IM has been cast on you..

I'll level it up to 85 then. How many Fg? I spent both these two days remaking the same character twice. I have to tell you and get off topic all the time because I have Ocd. confused:

OK are FC CS zons melee? They have physical damage but can attack from far away and up close. I guess I'm callling out a hack here but by your standards FCing is really melee.

Yes it is. It is a physical attack which is enhanced with electricity. It "Adds damage to your javelin". Much like enchant adding fire damage to your weapon, making it melee. Unless you HACK with farcast. But come on...It was not meant to be hacked.

At least you didn't contradict yourself by saying melee is hand-to-hand in one of your posts. But melee is Hand-to-hand so your disqualified. GF was close, not really try again.

ok, so melee is hand to hand according to you. how does that not make CS hand to hand?
the zon is stabbing something with her spear. that doesnt get any more hand to hand.
FC is a hack that allows you to stab that monster/person from a distance. you are still doing hand to hand.
