No one is pointing a gun at your head and making you post off topic.
WTF?
THE HELL does politics and YOUR birth have to do with when we celebrate Christmas?

Request time out for Math to ponder the wisdom of staying on topic, when asked by several people.
Just count that as a Christmas gift to me...

PLEASE...thank you.

I always celebrate Christmas on Christmas day. I always enjoy it but this year I will be kind of down Because I am away from all my friends and family in the states since I am in japan. Still should be a good time though.

I would like to say however, that Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus or god. It was a pagen holiday that was coverted to Catholic when emporer constantine converted the masses to christian. If you are truely christian and follow god's teaching from the bible you should celebrate christmas or a few of the other holidays.

If anyone cares to repute what I have givin then a new thread shall need to be start as this is niether the time nor the place for such a thing. I shall, however, enjoy disputing this further if anyone wished.

Actually he wasn't. As Siris mentioned it's December 25th because of Constantine. However it is about celebrating Christ's birth but it's on the 25th to muscle out the pagens basically. Not debating with Siris just clarifying.

Also, the nativity scene Blue was talking about was on display at a government building. It is not the place of government to take sides with any religion (Though frankly I don't care if an employee wants to make their place of work more festive).

I am Agnostic though I do celebrate Christmas with my family, more celebrate the spirit of the holiday than it's actual meaning. We celebrate on the eve and the day spending one day with each side of the family (Parents are seperated).

We celebrate Christmas (as in opening of gifts) on Christmas morning, Dec. 25. We usually put up a fake tree we have (one of my parents has some difficulty breathing, so no real trees) anytime about a week before Christmas. We usually also like to watch TV specials around this time of year.

Personally being an apatheist, I'm in the same boat as Spoony in celebrating the spirit of the holidays rather than any of the religious connections. Family is together, there may or may not be snow (usually not), friendly exchange of gifts, holiday TV specials, etc; a good time when we don't have to work and we can just be bums.

I enjoy holiday music, I laugh when people sue others for playing "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and other holiday music like the person playing the music was obviously trying to be religionist, I shudder at the thought of having to do holiday shopping outside the house (consumerism ftw).

Because one parent is Christian, the other Jewish, we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. However, we probably don't celebrate either as much as one who celebrates just one of them, so it's more of a liberal holiday celebration.

Yeah, cause people can't lie? Or thats what you all use to say when I brought up the Bible to back me up on discussions. The history book is no more believable than the Bible.

You ruined it by going off-topic and bringing up something that you knew would cause a debate. Yeah it was off-topic, no matter how slight it was.

I typed this because I read Siris' comment yesterday and was still on page 1 when I started writing it today, not realizing it had been replied to. I copied it when I realized I was on page 1, read the responses, and decided that I typed too many words to abandon it. Tongue

Quote:Christmas and politics began to mingle with one another when people decided that the religeous aspect of the holiday and how open people were with celebrating that aspect turned into shoving a religeon down their throat. Jewish people do, from time to time, have lights out on their houses in the shape of a Menorah. I've seen it. I didn't get angry. It's Hannukah time and Jews want to celebrate while we Christians celebrate Christmas. Good for them.

A lot of Atheists and Agnostics have no problem with Christans celebrating with mangers, depictions of angels, etc. Some do, and they try to eradicate it wherever they can and call Christians ignorant(as evidenced by their intolerant message left on a plaque in Olympia, Washington. I'll edit with a link for those that care, which is unlikely(http://www.mynorthwest.com/?nid=11&sid=111196)). It's stupid, but whatever. I guess it's their right to hate during the Holidays.

Also, to Siris, Pagans always celebrated the Winter Solstice. You're right. But Christmas is a Christian holiday, whether you want to believe it or not. The name, for instance, begins with "Christ". I understand that it's not celebrated exclusively by Christians any longer, and has become a secular holiday as well, but until people who aren't Christian and still celebrate it start calling it Solstice Day and stop using stars(symbolizing the Star of David which guided the Three Kings to Jesus) and angels on the tops of their trees and stop using candy canes as a symbol of the holidays, it will remain in my mind a Christian holiday.

Again, I'm not saying you have to be a certain religeon to enjoy and celebrate the holiday in any way you want, I'm just saying that while rooted in truth, your statement was incorrect.

I'd also like to add that Jesus was born in spring, the lambing season, probably around Easter time. He died/rose again around the time of Christmas. How the two got flip-flopped, we may never know.

This still does little to tell when YOU celebrate. I am not looking to find when Jesus was actually born.

1.It doesn't matter.
What lives in my heart is my own and I am not trying to convert anyone else.
Mike and Scott I KNOW what you are saying.....Christmas is about family....

regardless of religious belief.........take a breath....take a moment...hug a friend....hug a stranger....give a smile...give a moment...lend a hand...lend an ear...
be more than you thought you could be......and which ever day you celebrate..........
may it bring happiness to you, and you spread that joy.

I would like to reply to this comment by directing you to a thread I started almost two years ago. http://www.blizzsector.co/steam-room/378...tfbbq.html

Natural progression of conversation, you can ignore the rest of the thread since it was more about the specific issue of the time but the concept stands.

You do know that I'm not going to look right?
Of course I know Christmas wasn't Jesus' birth, but that wasn't the point.

Actually the thread is about natural progression of conversation not being off topic.
Someone makes a thread about Christmas + people start talking about the history and meaning of Christmas = conversation progressing.
