There is so much hype about female genital mutilation in Africa, that no-one spares a thought for all the thousands of tribal men that get circumcised at the age of 18+ [when it is considered they are a 'man'], that I think it really says something. They use no antiseptic or pain relievers, just a bit group of guys holding a man down. Then in comes the tribal 'doctor' and he hacks and slashes away until whatever was there before can somehow resemble what there is now.

Atleast with the women, they did it when they were very young children, and would give them alcohol to relieve the pain slightly. It's not wonderful, or humane, but I would sure as hell prefer that than having it done the way the men did.

I have seen videos of what Skye is talking about.It is brutal and ACCEPTED...sadly...as a right of passage.Many of the men/boys contract infections and consequently die.It is NOT Africa...it is culteral and tribal.....don't associate a whole country with a cultural event.

The country is beautiful, I would LOVE to go there one day. EVERY country has their own issues, they just vary.

The tribes just think it's right. It's the way they've done things for thousands of generations, and in a way, I feel like a bit of an asshole telling them to stop, when I have no idea behind their ways of thinking and their traditions.

A young African girl cannot be sold for marriage if she is uncircumsised, as men believe that she is 'oversexed' and dirty. It's the family's way of getting a good deal. A virgin for camels, or land, or an abundance of food and water. Their way of life is so hard for them, that they will take anything they can get. Hence why so many African families have so many children. The more girls they can marry off, the better off the other family members will be.

How do I know this? "Desert Flower" by Waris Dirie. It's a damn good read. Written by a nomad woman who ran away from her African family after her father tried to marry her off to an 80yo man in exchange for 5 camels.

Believe me, you'll think differently about the country if you hear the point of view from someone that was born and raised there.

i don't understand math how a mainstream religion can be a supposed solution. As skye said its a cultural thing, the people are aware of what they're doings are. If Many of the african nations were better off like North America than the practise would be over. I think that'd be easier and healthier than converting people.
