Usually this is the problem:
1. You have multiple Antivirus programs running. The antivirus programs could also be trying to do a scan or update when you get on.
2. You just have too much garbage on startup.
3. You have both the above and viruses
What you need to do?
Boot into safe mode (usually F8 before windows is loaded brings you to the selection screen for it)
Go start > run or in vista the search box at the bottom of start.
Type in msconfig
Click the services tab.
Check the box that says hide microsoft services.
Disable everything that is not necessary (if your confused about this post screenshots)
Go to the startup tab
uncheck everything that is not necessary (screenshots, again)
By necessary I mean a driver program, things like nvidia, realtek, intel, audio programs, ATI, jmicron, etc... Disabling these will hurt more than help.
Try starting up in normal mode again.
Let me know the results.

If your freezing at post, then that's an entire different story. Where did it freeze at post, it should start listing things like your processor, memory, attached drives, etc..
The post freeze issue needs to be resolved before we can figure anything else out.
Also, were you able to get into safe mode? Did Windows freeze in safe mode?
Is this a laptop computer or a desktop? Is it still under warranty?

Alright leme know if it keeps freezing at post. If your warranty is already expired I'd just take the side off and blow the fans out with a compressed air can. Something coulda been overheating.

It could be anything really, but I'd check heating problems first, he might have a fan out.
