World Chaos

Anyone that has heard or seen recent news will attest to the fact that there is a LOT of chaos that has been transpiring world wide.From many natural disasters,to armed conflict and civilian uprisings in various countries.
I am from the U.S. and reflect with deep thought and concern over recent events,as they pertain to affecting my country in general and my family in particular.
Wherever you are from in this world,these events will most likely affect you to various degrees.
What I am after is to know where you are from:
How is this affecting your lives,and what are your main concerns?
Please be as nice as you can when posting about this,as all the unruly and overly profane posters will generate my ire.
You really don't want to DO that.....trust me on this.
I will just start off by saying the people of Japan have shown great fortitude during their *tripple whammie*
Earthquake,tsunami,and nuclear melt down of a reactor is a LOT to face in such a short time.
I also think Obama is a dumbass in how he is handling this,as well as his novice use of our troops abroad. This is just my opinion,you are welcome to share your own.I am learning to love walking each time the price of gas goes up.......

I'm from the Nortwest of the US. While I have been checking in on the Japanese triple disaster constantly and hoping things lighten up for them, I do not generally pay much attention to world news. I suppose this is because I am young and mostly self-absorbed in my own little world. What I understand about the Libyan crisis is it is pretty tense and most people don't think it was handeled well, but I also understand that their government leader is a tyrant who has oppressed his people for some 40 years. Thats a lot of pain and suffering and I would like to see him removed from power but I do realize there is possibly a better way it could have been accomplished. The Japan crisis hits more home though as my state is involved deeply with the Japanese people (Washington) and the fact that my daughter is half Asian makes it even more personal. Although her and her mom are not actually Japanese (Korean), her mom was adopted and raised by a Japanese family so in a sense, they are part of my family. Thus, I worry about their people and hope that the Nuclear Plant that is nearing a meltdown gets under control, but yes, they have shown amazing fortitude in this crisis and their ability to come together and stand strong in the face of what has happened/is happening is nothing short of inspiring to myself and I am sure the world!

I am from Calgary, the Center of Canada. i noticed about the japanese triple disaster, particularly the nuclear meltdown, but i chose to ignore it because i cannot do anything. same for the uprisings, or anything else in the world.

This is not true in any way shape or form my friend. If one of those reactors actually meltdown and explode.. The radiation set forth from it will sweep all across North America from Japan. It might not be super dense and as devastating as it would be in Japan and where I live but it will affect you quite a bit. Not just in the fact that radiation pouring over your home area but it also affecting food supplies and other livelyhood items. I guarentee it will affect you. Maybe a little or maybe alot.

My brother, his wife, and his newborn were all in Japan (he's stationed there) for all of it. However, he was way north for most of it, but still had his heat and electricity off for about a week. She and their son are going to the Phillipines as part of this program (to live with her family) and he is helping with the relief effort.

probably. to be honest, it would not affect much unless a large cloud formed on top of the exploding nuclear plant, travelled to Calgary and then rained. but that's unlikely. had the plant exploded, all i can safely predict for Calgarians is a slight rise of cancer.

Math the only thing you contributed to this thread was letting us all know how self absorbed you are and blissfully unaware of how anything affects you that is going on in the world.
I am hoping that others with a bit more insight and awareness answer in this thread.

oh im aware of (nearly) everything. i chose not to care. after all, what can i do? i donated money, but i seriously doubt 2 dollars will do anything. maybe i should donate more...

It is sad to hear about the news about the recent disasters in Japan. In terms of what is being said in this thread, it should probably pretty obviously be stated that it doesn't really matter about Math's level of support with this thing - he's not the issue. It happened, and now hopefully the nation of the Japan can pull through and grieve for losses and rebuild (with the help of the rest of the world, of course). Or something like that, yeh, I'm not super at wording serious cases like this.

For me, the part that hit me was that there was a girl who had graduated a year before me from my college (it was mostly a case where had met a couple of times, but not like bestest of best best friends or anything) who was teaching about a mile away from where it was hit the hardest there. A week had passed, and her family had not heard from her. I saw it posted on Facebook, and everyone was hoping that it was just a case where she was not able to send out communication (like a huge portion of those affected) and let them know she was okay. Fortunately, she was able to send out communication (and she's ok; currently dealing with what is going on and helping out with what needs to be done), so that was a big sigh of relief.

It's just scary to know things like this can happen at anytime, and we're subject to the whim of the planet we rely so much on. Even if we did everything possible to make her happy, Mother Nature can really pack a punch.

Well when it comes to natural disasters. I have probably one of the worst ones sitting just off the coast of where I live. If the NW "Cascadia" fault line pops it would be like the Japan disaster only MUCH much worse. It would slam every US state and even a small part of canada on the east coast with earthquakes and likely some pretty bad tsunamis. Wouldn't stop there though as it would likely send Tsunamis across the pacific to Japan, Hawaii and the other asian islands. It would probably be the single worst disaster in the world. The only thing that could probably top it would be if Yellowstone erupted.

You summed up Mother Nature pretty well Jedi,and she has turned MY life topsy-turvy a few times.
@ Valdez: If Yellowstone erupted again it would be an extinction event quite litterally. The extent of the magmum just below it's surface is hundreds of miles wide and we can only estimate how deep.

Well, it wouldn't be a guarenteed extinction, but it would be pretty likely. It would cover 90% of the US in heavy to moderate Ash, the cloud could even reach Europe, but the thing that would do the most damage is all the toxic gasses it would release, most notably, sulfur. Sulfur would cause global temperature drops between 10-20 degrees. Still, there is a chance a decent number of people could survive. Especially if they are near the equator.
