Computer Overrun by Adware

My other computer, my 2001(or something) Windows 98 is completely dead right now because of this new wave of adware(or viruses or whatever it is).

My computer is now so ridden by this that it can't even perform basic functions. After I leave it on for a few minutes its completely covered by popups and after a few more minutes its just dead frozen.

I have no virus protection on that computer or any sort of anti-virus at all. I can't download one because the computer will freeze.

My current solution is to reformat it, and I have no idea how to do it. Also, is there any other solution to fix it? Can someone help?

Running in safe mode and then doing all that stuff wouldn't help, would it?

How do I reformat a computer? I've never done any of this in my life.

just use ad-aware it works the best. search for lavasoft on google to get it. make sure its updated before you scan though

Running in safe mode starts up only the absolute minimum of your computers resources. Make sure to start in safe mode with networking (if available) so you can get online.

Also try typing msconfig in Start>Run. Then see which programs are starting up and uncheck all the ones that look like adware. But this shouldnt be a problem in Safe Mode.

You can also download ad-aware or other programs, put them onto a cd, then install them on your Windows 98 and clean away.

The moral of the story: Porn is bad. So are random downloads
