You can make your items white or black by making your items Unique or Magical Quality, and selecting the appropriate name. For example, if I remember correctly, making an item a Unique Swordguard will make the item white (it will look like a sword in your inventory, but this is only a visual effect -- the item will still work fine in a D2 game.)
