I consider it a better game because HL is much deeper technically in single-player and multi-player...
The story far surpasses any shred of story Halo has ever delivered IMO. I mean it's not like space marines are original (see Doom). I guess an interdimensional rift isn't exactly "new" so to say either but beyond that it is better.
The idea in HL2 of a grassroots revolution is far more compelling than that of an "arbiter" send out by this "covenant" to do whatever. I find it hard to keep my attention on the story because I find it dry and without ideas. Actually maybe it's just hard to keep my attention on the same tired gameplay.
To be fair they do both have the "you are the only guy who can save the world" story going on in them. So that is a tossup on that section.
Gameplay wise HL2 beats out any Halo game I have ever played. Physics based gameplay is the core of it, it seems like in Halo jumping is the core of it to me. The physics based puzzles are far more fullfilling than a room full of brutes or whatever would be the "hard" or "fun" parts of Halo single-player to Halo fans. The gravity gun implemented in HL2 was original and contributed greatly to the game.
Graphics are a no-go in this competition. HL2 has Halo beat hands down. If you argue this you are blind.
The entertainment value is extremely greater with HL in my opinion. I will never forget first starting HL2 and getting off the train, and before entering City 17 the overwatch guard makes you pick up the can. I thought it was great and it is still a very memorable moment for me.
With HL2OB you are getting HL2 episodes 1 and 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. With Halo 3 you get just that... Halo 3. I know there is a mod community at least within Halo 2 but it is extremely small and limited because of hardware. With Half Life 2 you are not only paying for the original games but for ALL of the mods that are already out and that will come out. There are some great HL mods and it is generally one of the best mod communities IMO. So yes I think Orange Box is a better deal than Halo 3 because you are buying not only the game but you are buying stuff that will entertain you for months beyond just the single-player game. If anyone believes they can argue this feel free. I just see no comparison.
