Christmas Trees!!
There’s a special moment every holiday season when I lay down on the floor in front of the overly decorated Christmas tree , stare up through the branches at light reflecting off tinsel, and think to myself, “there is nothing more beautiful.”
Of course it’s a fleeting moment, often interrupted by urgent shouts of “Watch out, the tree is listing!”, or “Why does she always get to put the angel on top?”
But it is a glorious moment, because it’s nearly always preceded by stressful discussions that seldom lead to holiday cheer. Knowing that my experiences aren’t that much different from most families, I’m betting that somewhere, sometime during the past few weeks, someone has voiced the following comments:
“Why don’t you pick out the tree yourself dear? You know how it always leads to arguments.”
“I am looking for a tree about this tall and this wide….with a perfect shape and no visible holes. Surely you have more trees to choose from.”
“You hold the top and I’ll spin it around to see what the other side looks like. Ouch! These needles are prickly.”
“I’m pulling this end….you’re the slacker! Wait, stop! My finger is caught between the doorjamb and the tree!”
“Look kids, what a pretty tree.”
“All right , everybody hold the tree while I fit it in the stand and tighten the……rats…it won’t fit. Somebody get me the saw.”
“Look out it’s tipping over Mom!”
“Where did you put the ornaments? They are NOT in the hall closet! I AM looking behind the suitcases!”
“Who put these lights away last year? They are tangled worse than a bowl of spaghetti!”
“Ouch! This light bulb is broken. Bring me the pliers so we can get the glass out of the socket.”
“They’re not blinking Mom. Maybe we should wiggle the bulbs.”
“Blink damn you blink! Where in the hell is the extension cord?”
“Watch the cat…WATCH THE CAT!”
“Hang the the big ornaments first. Then you can throw tinsel on it…..no not all in big clumps…….a few at a time!”
“Isn’t this the prettiest tree ever?”
“You say that every year!”
Merry Christmas!!
