The requirements for HL2 are as follows:

minimum System Configuration

1.2 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
DirectX 7 capable graphics card
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection

Preferred System Configuration

2.4 GHz Processor
512MB RAM
DirectX 9 capable graphics card 256mb
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection

That PC should last you at least 2 years, unless you're one of those people that HAS to have the latest processor. Intel is working on a Dualcore Prescott P4 as we speak. I think the clock speeds should be upwards of 5Ghz.

Which processor would you reccomend? Because I'm not getting this for a couple months, so that intel one might be out by then. =\
#4
all i have to say is that if your using it for gaming do not get service pack 2, and try to stay away from direct x9c i think it is, some games dont like them.

But I thought for max performance on HL2, it wants DirectX9...?

I'm not to great with computer stuff, so I just need to know whats best >_<

Oh, and why not sp2? <.<

Service pack 2 works fine on every game I've tried, Including Ragnarok Online, Ultima Online, Shadowbane, Everquest, and Diablo II. AMD's are great for gaming, plus that Intel CPU isn't even out of the design stage yet. I give it about 6 more months before they start testing prototypes. After it IS released, expect it to cost upwards of $500.00 USD.

As for directX 9, just use 9b not 9c if you can help it. If it's required, then I guess you're stuck with it.

Awesome, I just looked up some stuff about the computer and it says

Microsoft DirectX® 9.0b
Ensures that users get DirectX 9.0b, the latest, most stable version of Microsoft’s gaming and graphics technology.

=D

ive had problems with service pack 2 on morrowind.

What's better : ATI RADEON™ X800 XT Platinum Edition 256MB DDR3 w/Digital and TV Out

OR

Dual (Two of em) NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6800 Ultra PCI Express 256MB DDR3 with NVIDIA SLI Technology

??

BlackMage908... if you bought all of that stuff, that would cost like $1500+

And why do you need 2 nVidia 6800's? Isn't one enough? lol.
#11
I know it'll cost a lot, If I get good grades, My dad is going to get me any computer I want under $4,500

Not my money =D

I just want a good compter that's going to last...
#12
That system will get about 70-100fps in HL2 so yes its fine for playing HL2. I would ditch the FX-55 and just get the FX-53. Save yourself $200 or so and use it to buy some more mem cause with a system like that it will be the only thing holding you back in the long. Or upgrade to DDR 4400, I think its out now.

I looked at the DDR 4400 and it does seem pretty good, but it doesn't look like I can purchase it right from the website...Should I just get the computer first then upgrade it later when I'm low on memory?

Btw, I could get a system drive with 800 gig o_O

What would be better : a 148 gig drive with 10,000 rpm?

Or a 800 gig with 7,200 rpm??

__________________________________________________________________

Instead of upgrading later to the DDR, should I just get 2 gig corsair?

>.<
#14
Gah, I'm being a post whore today...

Anyway

Does anyway know about how many gig HL2 takes up?

I'm only planning on installing HL2, HL:S, CS:S, DOD:S, and maybe some games relased in the future =\
#15
in that case the 10000rpm would be better.
#16
Alright, thanks for all the help

Anyways, you mentioned getting 2 nVidia 6800's. I ask you again, why do you need to gfx/video cards? Big Grin

Dono, It says this model uses both of them on one screen to pwn all...<.<

Can you link me to it? Because I think it's just a trick, like Hyperthreading Technology.

HT is supposed to use two processors, when it actually only uses one at a time, because intel pentiums are known to crash, so the other one would be used as a backup.

I await your link Big Grin

It uses duel-gpu's or something <.<

Heres the link http://alienware.com/product_detail_page...KU-DEFAULT

Here's a more advanced version of the model, only get it if you can spend 6-7k on it LOL
