ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition
or
Nvidia 6800 Ultra
I can't decide for the life of me... If any of you could give some reasons why they would (or do) prefer one over the other it would be quite helpful.
Oh, and I don't think I'm going to even bother with SLi.

I've seen some mobos that don't go well with ATI cards. Make sure yours does.

Well, I'm pretty much just buying the card for Half Life 2, and I just bought Battlefield 2 but with the card I have now I can only play it with ALL low settings. I think I'm going to go with the ATI card, the only thing I would want the Nvidia for is Doom 3, but I've already played through that a few times on Xbox. Thanks everyone.

Hmm, well I think I'm going to go with the 5 out of 5 people who said ATI.
Of course, now this poses a new problem, I need to buy a new motherboard. I think I've already decided on one though, Asus' P5WD2 Premium, ( PCIe).
This shall be one expensive project.

Wait...I see a new video card and a new motherboard but I see no new processor? Do you already have a 775socket P4? If so cool if not your project just got a tad bit more expensive.
Guess I'm the only Nvidia fan.
BTW new video cards that will smoke any all of the current ones will be coming out around the end of the year and the beggining of '06.

i go with ATI!!!! the x850 chip is "crossfire" compatible, which is this thing that gives you super graphics supposedly. look here http://www.ati.com/technology/crossfire/index.html
pretttty good stuff (but your mobo has to be compatible too)

Yeah, I knew before that I would need to buy a new processor (my 478 just won't fit in a 775 socket.) :p
As with the new video cards, now I'm deciding if I want to buy a card now, and when new cards come out I'll sell my card and throw in some money and buy one of those... Or if I just want to wait for the new ones.
The new cards won't require anything more than what the new mobo that I'm getting has, right?

Dont know for sure. As far as I know PCI-e is all it will need...that or APG but my money is on PCI-e.
On a side note it just occured to me...what brand and watt PSU do you have? The current video cards are beasts when it comes to power consumption.

GET THE NVIDIA, They are the best card ever.. you dont even have to by that Nvidia card.. i reccomend the Nvidia Bloody Monster..... 256 mb.. and if you get the extreme its DDR3.. and then get a water cooling system for it.. and overclock it 102% and you will have a Graphics adapter that can whoop any ATI or other adapter out there... I know i have 1.... You can bench make aorund 16 or 17k whereas an ATI ( on a good system.. ofcourse) will push about a 14 or 15.. and it will give you the best gaming experience available on the market.

I REALLY wish that people other than me would take the time to find some benchmarks and reviews because if any of the people supporting ATi even bothered to they would have realised that Nivida has won this round of graphics cards hands down. But alas everyone here is an ATi fanatic.
