How to protect yourself from viruses/trojans/spyware
#41
Ok they fixed that good. I never heard about it messing with BIOS and I never saw it, note that i'm pretty up to date when it comes to comps. O well not a problem for me I have norton system works 2003 and it works fine. I also have 2 firewalls, 2 spyware deleting programs, and i manually check my computer for suspicious behavior once every couple weeks. Norton wont completely protect you, but then again, name one program that will. Nothing can completely protect you because as soon as norton hits the market hackers buy it, break it down, and find a way around it. Firewalls and spyware blockers are the same way. But for the most part, my comp is 99% problem free when it comes to stuff like viruses and errors. Norton system works 03 rocks, I advise ppl to get it or 04 if they can't find 03. 04 seems to have a few minor bugs so i still prefer 03 right now, but symantec will fix that im sure. Plus 03 has ghost backup and I love that thing lol.

Tonberry Wrote:look i know what im talking about i DONT dl norton BECAUSE it is bad if you think it is good YOU are the ***IN IDIOT not me .OK i dont care what you THINK i KNOW that norton is BAD it is a bad program it DOSENT completely protect your computer ok.
ive already said this many times it USED TO **** around in bios it dosent any more they fixed that OK
norton is not ****ing bad you jerkoff. your assuming things. your tech buddy may be an "expert" but he isn't perfect. norton cannot screw up your computer, its you yourself who screws up ur comp. everyone i know uses it, i use it and there have been no problems. and no virus protection is perfect to begin with.

Hey all I can say is I have had Norton system works 2003 on my PC for 1&1/2 years now and while I had a little trouble with it (it was my fault), it has workder smoothly. I run my computer very hard and Norton is always working, still, no problems because of Norton. Maybe it can mes with your BIOS if you don't know how to use it properly, but for those of us computer literate people out there who know what we are doing, Norton is a great product. I haven't had any problems with my PC in nearly 2 years of operation unless it was an error caused by me, so no, Norton is not a problem. The people who used it and didn't know what they were doing may have had trouble, but thats about it.

hey well i have trend micro internet secruity is this a good virus scanner? also i notice taht a window pops up al;ot that says do you want to check for updates this happens about 5 times a day..
#45
I had that on my PC when I got it. I didn't trust it so I use Norton 2003 now. It may be ok for some things, but others get by it easily. As for the update thing, is that from trend micro? If so I would guess it is asking for you to update your virus definitions. You can probably go into your settings and change it to ask you once a day or whenever you want it to.

Look Norton is not as good as some other products ok dont keep flaming me i know what im talking about ive seen firsthand what norton did the computer could not get viruses from the inet it wasent connected at the time and norton was the only program that could do this i was told about it and then i SAW it happen it doesent happen any more ok so im just going to say that we will have to agree to disagree about this
but if you think your right and i do were not ever going to resolve this so lets get over it im just trying to say that i think norton may damage your system (btw how have you been running norton sys works 2003 for 2 years that is impossible (its only been 1.5 years at the latest since its release(i think)))

I said nearly 2 years, firts off read the post in it's entirety before calling me a liar you idiot. I have had my current PC running in good performance for 2 years, I have had Norton 03 on it for nearly as long as I have had my PC, note that I got it from a friend not the store...so I have no idea about a release date...but I have ahd it since a couple of months ater I got this PC..so that is about 1 1/2 years. Second here, Norton may have damaged a system in past versions, but 2003 does NOT damage your system. If it did, my PC would have been destroyed after more than a year with Norton on it and running. Tonberry, might I ask, if the Pc that was damaged by Norton couldn't get a virus because it had not been on the net, was it ever on the net, because there IS such a thing as a sleeper virus that will activate days and sometimes months after infection, so if the PC had ever been on the net, it could have had one and if it were and older Norton it may not have picked it up. You may be right about that one PC being damaged by an older Norton, but the newer Norton, along with the fact that someone may have done something unknown to that certain PC you keep referring to, makes it impossible to rely on that for proof that Norton is bad. Norton is good now, might not have been before, I don't know, I never used anything before 03. So I won't argue about anything before 03 because I honestly don't know. But 03 works fine, and that one PC you saw mess up could have had an older Norton, could possibly have already been screwed before Norton was installed, and may have had a sleeper virus, so quit using that as proof, as it is not a credible reason to call Norton "bad". EDIT: NOTE TO TONBERRY: You are an idiot, you should read my entire post before posting. I said clearly that I have had my PC for nearly 2 years without any error other than my own mistakes, and that I have been running Norton 03 for nearly 1 1/2 years now problem free. Thus, Norton is NOT a problem. Quit trying to convince anyone otherwise, because I am willing to bet this forum is full of enough techies that know well enough what they are talking about to prove you wrong, one of those would be me, so quit your whining and *****ing because you may be right aout Norton screwing with one certain PC's BIOS, but I gurantee it WAS NOT a procedure of the Norton program. Possibly a glitch or malfunction in the program, which happened solely on that PC, and solely with that SINGULAR NORTON PROGRAM DISC. Don't believe me? Ask any of the hundreds of techies around...

Is there anyways to get rid of parasites... theres this one thats a spyware advertising spyware remover... I cant get rid of it. =/. Tried hijack this and the other ones. Hijack this did screw up one of my progs but I didnt need it.
#49
What exactly does it say. Does it take up your whole screen or is it pop-up size? Check regedit for foreign stuff that looks strange. It's strange that Hijack this wouldn't work. Always does for me.

I use cwshredder to get rid of it then within an hour it comes back.

Its a site that keeps becoming my homepage with a spyware popup thats small but its annoying. The site I keep changing it to something else as default homepage and it keeps coming back.
#51
Yeah, i have a "mysearchnow" toolbar on my startup page. It's really annoying.
#52
Try using Spybot-Search & Destroy. Go into the side bar and click tools and then Resident, and activate the Tea Timer program it will ask you every time something tries to change the homepage or something like that and if you will allow it.

elterion Wrote:Yeah, i have a "mysearchnow" toolbar on my startup page. It's really annoying.

cwshredder will remove that
#54
My homepage won't reset...I even tried re-installing IE and it didn't work..
#55
A search website.... and it doesnt let me block it in blocked pages.
#56
hey lyc does it say sumthin like C:\searchpage?

splintercell Wrote:My homepage won't reset...I even tried re-installing IE and it didn't work..
Reinstalling that won't do a damn thing. Most of the annoying files are found in regedit. try going there and looking around.
#58
turn off system restore first the run cwshredder and spybot s&d and if you want ad-aware reboot and turn on system restore again if you wish

and post your hijack this log and i'll look at it and see if i can find the problem
#59
I'm not sure what the big hype about cwshredder is. I had multiple things that it couldn't get rid of. Then i downloaded hijack this and it got rid of everything.

i am going to say this 1 last time then i am going to unsubscirbe from this thread because i dont want to hear it I think norton is bad i think this because i have seen it go crazy i asked why and the answer i got was that it was nortons fault i asked some computer techs if it was bad they both said yes for varying reasons one (this was a little while ago maybe 2002) it CAN stuff up BIOS two (recently) it provides low level protection three it MAY need reinstalling to get it to work properly
these are my reasons i dont want ne1 to reply just respect my opinion and drop it some people may have the same problem as i saw and this may be y but it wont help ne1 if we keep arguing ok SO STOP cos i am
