help making a bad*ss character

i just got this game 2 days ago and have a level 18 barbarian. im gonna make a new character soon (probably a sorceress because of ranged attacks) because im dissapointed with the barby. I need someone to help describe how i should make the sorceress as i go so i dont make a character that will get crushed when i play later on. I know theres fire and cold sorc, which is better? how should i make it so that when i get to a high level it will be worth playing for. I dont wanna have to start over (the sorc) because i made him gay. help please.
