Metal has too many subgenres. I don't even know what genres I listen to anymore.
Dimmu Borgir black metal? No? Don't care. ![]()
09-07-2005, 04:08 PM
their first two albums, yea.
now it is more symphonic metal.
09-07-2005, 04:13 PM
Actually, since I'm awesome and stuff, I'm going to take the liberty of:
- Removing all subgengres. There is now ONLY Metal. I listen to Metal. You listen to Metal. ![]()
09-07-2005, 04:24 PM
you have your ways of classifying music, i have my ways. each genre has a far deeper meaning within itself.
09-07-2005, 04:26 PM
Theres quite a few black metal bands out there... Not all metal is the same Pant, Metallica is heavy, Slayer is death, and stuff like Venom, Bathory, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, ect are black metal...
My favorite black metal band would have to be Bathory though... Dunno if anyone has heard them though... Pretty bad @$$.
09-07-2005, 04:28 PM
Yeah, that's stupid. I started getting lost when they called Thrash Metal... Speed Metal.
I mean what the hell, isn't it the exact same thing? What the hell is the difference between Death Metal and Black Metal? What about Melodic Symphonic Death Acid Metal... with Cheese? It's getting ridiculous. Metalheads are typically the smartest kids, and we keep coming up with these stupid subgenres that we don't even understand anymore. I hate it. ![]()

uhh ya. right up there with hip hop fans. the rest of your post is funny. but maybe you should talk to more people who don't listen to metal.

Just to get this one out there, Metalheads ARE some of the smartest young people I have met. Sure, they're not ALL genius material- but for the most part, they're above average intelligence.
I'll toss this out as an example. Look at most of the people who listen to metal on the forum. Near flawless spelling and grammar. Sure, that's not a SURE sign of intelligence, but it's the first step to a legible, intelligent post. Away from the internet, my friends all listen to metal. They are also some of the smartest people I know. Sure, that may not mean anything to you, because it is an opinion; but I figured I'd shoot it out there anyway. -- I'm all for wide musical tastes. I listen to more than just metal. I enjoy listening to Classical, Rock and Techno. I will also listen to some rap or hip-hop on occasion. I've got more of a taste than most of you kids would imagine. Anyway, what I said may seem biased to you, but It's 2:30am, my girlfriend is here and I've been to one out of four school days. I'm tired, sore, and my brain hurts. But all these subgenres still really **** me off. Going to bed... Hiio! ~Pant Quote:Slayer is death WHAT!? "God damnit, Leroy. You're stupid as hell." I'll argue that shit when I come back. ![]()

hehe. too bad people on forums are ussually smart people anyways.
i guess what i'm saying is that most fans of the metal genre that i've met (in person) are morons. with the exception of about 4. music preference has nothing to do with verbal or non-verbal IQ. period, end of statement. i guess you just lucky with the whole your outside friends things. intellegent people tend to gather around other intellegent people, your musical preference has nothing to do with the level of intellegence of you or your peers. any moron with an average IQ that paid half-attention in english class. can write up a post with fairly big words. i feel asleep in english class almost everyday. yet i somehow manage to post something that has correct grammer (which i honestly think has nothing to do with IQ, i'm talking grammer here). i'm drunk right now, i didn't use spell check, and i failed english class almost the entire time i was in high school....yet some how i have no typos....amazing. must be cuz i listen to metal.......... NO. because i don't. maybe it has something to do with me actually being of normal intellegence. now that sounds like a sentence i can support.

geves Wrote:any moron with an average IQ that paid half-attention in english class. can write up a post with fairly big words. i feel asleep in english class almost everyday. yet i somehow manage to post something that has correct grammer... You're obviously not one of those morons that paid attention in English. Ever hear of capital letters? And you "feel" asleep in English? They call that nastalgia. Oh wait, I think you meant FELL asleep. Quote: yet some how i have no typos *Cough* You just fly in for the stupid convention (Thank you Sponge Bob)? Quote: level of intellegence If you try and claim intelligence you should atleast be able to spell the word. Quote: ussually Two for emphasis? Oh, just so you know, the elipsies (...) are not meant to be used in that manner. They express a long pause or omitted information. You're using them as if they were periods or commas. You even use periods as commas at some points. Mr. Period would be devistated right now. Now I will actually point out the flaws in what you're saying. Why? A simple answer, I'm a Metal Head and I am therefor smarter than you. Quote: hehe. too bad people on forums are ussually smart people anyways. I hate to be the one to break this to you but, people on forums are morons most of the time. The majority of them are 12 year olds that think they're the greatest thing on the planet. They can't spell, they can't comprehend the concept of a complete sentence, and they attempt to flame you with things that often make no sense. Quote: maybe it has something to do with me actually being of normal intellegence. First you say that your musical preference has no effect on your intelligence and now you say listening to metal meaning you have a normal intelligence is a fine statement to make? Take a stand and stick to it, your essays in school will be terrible if you can't stick to one side. Quote: your musical preference has nothing to do with the level of intellegence of you or your peers. Maybe not your preference for a particular genre but quite often you can tell a bit of someone's intelligence by the bands they listen to. HAve you ever seen a Tool fan, that understands the music, that's completely brain dead? Have you ever seen someone with John Lennon on their t-shirt scratch their heads during class and stare blankly (One that wasn't stoned)? Now, an example: In the ninth grade a little group I hung out with became known as the "Metal Heads," it was an official label placed by the rest of the school. We all had our own nicknames (Spoon Man, The Pantera Princess, Jack Daniels, etc...) and diferent personalities but you know what stood true among the majority of that group? In a class of about 100 or so kids we had 7 of the top 10 GPAs. Another point, I find most Metal Heads are more interested in the technicalities and the structure of music than fans of any other genre. Don't try and tell me writing music is easy either. Music is very mathematical and very complex, anyone that understands the mechanics of music has worked hard for that understanding. One last point, I'm a Metal Head...I'm smarter than you.

 Well done spoon i couldent of put it better ........ im not a metal head but i do listen to it, i wouldent say there smarter (and dont rip my typo's apart like the last guy :wacky: ) but i would agree saying they understand music more and they do know about it in great detail.

Pantallica and Spoon, I pretty much agree with most things that You say, except for:
Actually, since I'm awesome and stuff, I'm going to take the liberty of: - Removing all subgengres. There is now ONLY Metal. I listen to Metal. You listen to Metal. I respect Your opinion, but I do believe that there are subgenres in metal, just for example, You cannot compare something like Morbid Angel to Sentenced, yet they are both Metal. Even though there is quite a wide range of metal that I listen to, I have to say that I prefer the Northern bands more. It's not because I'm a native of the area, but because for me the "Northern" sound is a lot different to, for example the "US" sound of Death Metal. It is something that You cannot describe, but for me there is a difference of "sound" there. Feel free to disagree, this is just my opinion. (By the way You know what they say about opinions, they are like assholes, everybody's got one and they are all dirty)

Cradle of filth are NOT black metal. they are symphonic metal. dimmu, symphonic. Venom, Pisstake band. Bathory are black metal. And spoon. its different over here. Most metal fans over here are complete time wasters who live off government handouts. While where here, anyone into some nice lovely children of bodom? ![]()

Children of Bodom is good stuff.
Just to be clear, that whole "I'm a Metal Head so I'm smarter" thing was just meant to mock him. I acknowledge that there are idiotic Metal Heads I just needed to point out to that guy that he is not a smart person, as he seems to assume.

Hey geves, you said that smart people all flock to a group? Well i find that music is often a big part in forming friendships, i myself listen to metal. I cannot stand rap or hip hop. BUT most other forms/types of music i can deal with. You said that smart people flock to one group, but I find that VERY UNTRUE. Music/"Fashion"/Style are all what shape friendships and groups of people. Intellegence only sometimes plays its part, but I have dumb as shit friends AND smart friends, so you are very wrong my friend.

PantallicA Wrote:Yeah, that's stupid. I started getting lost when they called Thrash Metal... Speed Metal. i think that is simply ignorant. black metal and death metal have a huge difference, not only music wise, but the concept. black metal and death metal music serve different purpose. each music has it's own meaning. it is way too broad just to label them all as metal. if it is so hard for you to tell apart from each subgenres, then i suggest you listen closely to the music and maybe actually learning the concept of music progression. metal is not just something you party and rock out to. especially black metal.

>uhh ya. right up there with hip hop fans.
Stop the train, get off, dust your boots, and eat your own shit. Are you insinuating, even slightly, that hiphop fans are NOT intelligent? What kind of hiphop do you listen to? 50 Cent? Eminem? Hiphop is about self expression through poetry rather than a musical instrument. Artists like Sage Francis, Immortal Technique, Sabac Red, or even older Jedi Mind Tricks can say more in four minutes than most anyone can say in a lifetime. What makes you think that we, hiphop fans, are not intelligent? What, we tend to point out political flaws? We like to indulge in the.. finer things in life? What, because our subculture tends to stereotypically be tied to minorities? What exactly is your reasoning on that? Please explain. Oh, wait... can you? ....... Yeah, I listen to metal. As far as genras go, 'black' metal would only appeal to me as far as extreme musicianship. I don't typically enjoy the writing style or vocal delivery on many black metal releases, so if the musicianship isn't there on many levels it's not my cup of tea. For example, Alexi from Children of Bodom has stated many times vocals, and even songwriting, take a backseat to his guitar work. I'm not going to say that is why I idolize Alexi and have even baught some of his releases (One Synergy album and the first two CoB albums), but it does help when you have songs like Kissing the Shadows. Arguably, the lyrics are shit in that song and Alexi really doesn't have the pipes he should. Does anyone really care? *silence* Emolliated. Wrote:I hope Nu Metal doesn't fit in that statement. Music is a form of creativity and personal outlet. When someone writes a song, more times than not it's drawing from personal feeling or experiences and channeling it into poetry and/or riffs. Just because you don't enjoy a certain type of music gives you no right what-so-ever to bash it in any way. Just don't listen. Sure, I don't really enjoy nu-metal either, but I'll never bash it in a serious manner.

Ok hold on, I may have misrepresented myself here.
What I meant to say when I said "most metal fans are smart," I meant to say "Most intelligent people listen to metal." You know, like a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square. (My post may get confusing here. There are so many arguments in this thread and I'm just pointing out what I can remember without looking through the thread to weed stuff out.) All the metal subgenres... I stand for what I said. It is completely stupid to have to many god damn genres. Death and Black metal? Symphonic? What the hell is that? When I listen to my music, I call it metal. I listen from everything to Children of Bodom to Metallica, ranging over tons of different styles. Not once do I consider it a seperate genre. It's so out of hand that I'm going to have to post a list of bands I listen to for years to find out what genres they are, so I don't look like an idiot when I post in a thread entitled "The Black Metal Thread" and say Dimmu Borgir. Would have I been better off if I had said Opeth or The Haunted? In my mind, no. Metal is metal. ~Im finishing this post because I want to go play WoW. Laters. ![]() |
