Black Metal Thread

I should start adding a Wink at the end of every one of my posts. I'm taken to seriously.

I find that mainstream hip-hop and rap is beat-oriented and as long as the lyrics rhyme, they're fine (not saying that some of the lyrics aren't clever). I also find that quite a bit of people that listen to main-stream hip-hop are just easily amused by how the beat sounds and, in some occasions, at how fast the rapper says things (Twista for example)... Or, an even lowlier deed, because they think they have to listen to the music to fit in.

Gangsta rap is just trash. We don't want to hear about how you "busted a cap" and "banged a ho" and put spinners on your piece of shit car... in your imagination. I'm not even going to go into that much detail about gangsta rap.

Also, I listen to metal, and I'm no dummy.

Thanks Spoon, for doing what I would probably never have the time to do.

EDIT: Just pretty much did an overhaul of my entire post.

That's really funny...you should correct the person that mentioned them BEFORE me before you try and correct me. I was agreeing with Oresama. At what point did I saw they were black metal?

Also, I'm with Pant in that I don't label in sub genres. I do on occassion to make it more clear exactly what type of music a band is. If I say I'm a Metal Head though, I mean I just love metal in general. Though I really can't get into alot of the newer bands out there.

Haha. just because people dont parade it around on here doesn't mean your the only one. I listened to the stuff for years. got bored of it.
And oh yes. We know cob is powermetal, i never said it was black metal. like pant said, metal is just metal. it may have subgenre's but is basically all implemented in the same basic ways.

I beg to disagree. It is wrong to say that "it all originates from my country" (Norway I presume You mean), because if You look at the bands that were the "starters" of black metal, (Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, etc), then You would be surprised to find out that they all had their outside influences. Euronymous of Mayhem even said that the music, style and especially appearance of Mayhem was greatly influenced by Sarcofago (surprise surprise, they're Brazilian). I recently managed to get hold of a tape of Sarcofago and if You listened to that You would understand what I mean. Darkthrone said that they were heavily influenced by Celtic Frost (Swiss). Even the more so when You look at whence the termin "Black Metal" came. Black Metal was the name of an album by Venom (British) and was originally a description for the lyrics in the music, not for the sound itself. The elements of "sound" that we are used to calling Black Metal nowdays were present in many other bands before Mayhem or Darkthrone.

"i think im the only real black metaller here."
I think not.

Personally, I listen to a lot of metal, except for Nu. My favourites are probably Darkthrone, Satyricon, Mayhem, Emperor, The 69 Eyes, Behemoth, Morbid Angel etc, and also lot of bands from my own country such as Loits, Meinardus, Metsatöll, Must Missa and Bestia.

By the way, I think that Children of Bodom is one band that cannot be given a subgenre, because it just has so many different elements, however I have always stuck to the desciption "Progressive Black Metal" (Personal choice).

I think you forgot some essentials. Every band who plays distorted guitars and solos owes a debt to a few bands that could never be repaid in gold and diamonds.

For one, the most obvious, would be the Beatles and the Rolling stones. Why? Why not? Who didn't they influence? They started modern rock and roll, period. They essentially built on what the forefathers of the previous generation (blues and country) and built on it, with the help of the British rock scene. They started it.

Later on, two huge figureheads came into play. First, it was Led Zeppelin.

Then, THE absolute godfathers of metal, Black Sabbath.

If you disagree with this post, you're wrong. By the way, kids, I love how we're all genre connesseurs, but get so caught up in it we don't realize what sucks and what's good. A genre is a goddamned label to distribute music, not a tag of which to identify yourself with. Try picking up a chick and when she asks you what music you dig.. "Oh, I love power symphonic doomish metal."

Maybe in Norway, but even then your chicks are super dorks. Genres suck, lots of people have said this.. there's only two real genres. Good music, and bad music. If it's fun, and it's good, so be it. If you don't like it, don't listen.

I admit, I know nothing about this 'black metal' so you speak of, however, EVERY person i've ever met seems to place CoB into the 'Black' or 'Death' metal genre. If they're wrong, it shows how damned pathetic this whole labeling business is. You're going to SOOOOOOOO look like a super nerd when you argue what placement a band should be in, rather than why you like or don't like them.

"I think CoB is a great black metal band"
'Yeah, well bxtch, they're Power Metal with harsh vocals!!!!!!!!!!!!'

Dorks

Don't forget Pink Floyd and Deep Purple.

By the way, I wrote this on one of my earlier posts, "Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one and they're all dirty". I am not argueing with anybody, I'm merely expressing my opinion (I believe I have the right to do so, correct me if I'm wrong).

Yes, I do agree. Pink Floyd and Deep Purple had amazing impacts on all of music, and I actually considered adding Deep Purple. I really don't see how anyone could dispute something like Sabbath or Zeppelin's influence on any genra of guitar oriented music, though

The name calling part of that post was the manditory joke part of my post. You know that.

Nobody really cares what I think I guess. I know two mods are on my balls trying to get me banned. One actually sent me a PM about it. I'm not allowed to have fun on the internets anymore

Sub-genres exist whether you like them or not. deal with it.

I love that everyone is getting all butt-hurt about specific labels for music. Get over it.

I never was doing that Wink, it's just that if I was going to write out all I know about the influences on rock and metal (as far as I know) it would take a lot longer, so just to keep it simple. I agree that the "Godfathers" of metal must be Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc, however, I am saying this off the top of my head and may be completely wrong (please correct me if I am), but didn't the Big 4 Of Thrash (+Celtic Frost) start rising around the middle of the 70s?

rising? maybe club gigs and getting their act together. that is, if you mean Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. The actual releases that affected the masses weren't put out until the early/mid eighties though

And also Anthrax... (Celtic Frost is counted as the 5th one, besides the 4) I don't listen to Metallica, but weren't their 1st albums in the early 80's?

Yes, Kill 'Em All was the first release. I thought you meant four counting Celtic, so I left out Anthrax.
