Wireless or hardwire router?
#1
For almost ever i've had dial-up. Now im getting a local wirless service provider since it is the only non dial-up (other than satilite i suppose) internet access i can get. And since we have to computers I am going to need a router to use both of them correct? My question is wether or not I should buy a wirless over a wired router. I really dont know anything about this subject since im just getting out of dial-up. My firend had wirless to his computer and he said it was horrible. so whats pros and cons to them?

Go hardwire= less lag and more reliable connection.
Wireless= Moblility

Wireless if set up incorrectly and with bad encryption is not only bad for losing connection, but it is easy for a hacker to sit outside of your house in a van and get into your connection. I only suggest it for notebooks, insecure, unreliable, and just dumb to use it on a PC.

If you want options, get a D-Link 624 router (one antena is latest release, should be the one in stores). It is ranked as one of the best, with good wireless and ports in the back for wired. BE SURE TO DISABLE WIRELESS IN THE OPTIONS IF YOU ARE GOING TO JUST USE WIRED.

I use it, if you want you can PM me or reply here if you want to know how to properly set it up and stuff, although it is mostly idiot-proof.

Best you can get lately is a Billion. Not sure if you have them there. Quite popular here in Australia. Definately prefered over D-Link, Netgear and all those. I have a 7404VGP, wireless, 4port wired hub, QOS, Firewall, viop. What are the uses of your computers. If you only use one for gaming put the router next to that and use some good quality Cat6 cable. And use wireless for your other PC. With the Billion + Upgraded 9dbi 30cm antenna i can use my laptop in the neighbours house. (bigger propertys here in aus 2 :p)

I still prefer DLink\Linksys over Netgear\Billion, but it's all personal preferance. I still only recommend wireless on laptops or PCs very far away... it's just too insecure if you do not know what you are doing.

well the #1 rule after you set up your network is to secure it. if your connection is not a long distance i would go wireless. set up a Nice firewall make the user + passowrd had to crack such as crAcK!@#$1234 then your good to go, dont worry about hackers on your wireless network bc without a username or password there stuck. but if you wont holes in your wall + Cap5 cable everwere go for it

Well, a guy came out about a week ago. Installed the thing on our roof, rang cables, ect...and then told us they cant provide us out here. Of course after telling them to check if they can provvide us several times, they only checed our Zip code and guess we were in there area. So im stuck on dial-up right now thats so bad it cant even play diablo2 let alone guildwars or warcraft 3. Even opening this page took several failed tries and refreshes. How strong is a cantenna? I mean if i was in a city i know i could get a signal. Think there is any way i could leach from the country?
