Would someone explain to me the meaning/story behind thanks giving? Because from Australia's point of view its just another pointless American public holiday.

When pilgrims first came to America, they had a big feast with a bunch of Indians.

And Happy Thanksgiving, mine comes in 40mins still though.
I don't even know where I'm going to be celebrating it...

Because we knock off work every Friday at 1:00 and go to the pub.

Mitch : Thanksgiving is a tradition started after the first really good harvest the new immigrants had, after a very cold and bleak winter the year before.

With hostile indian attacks and raids, only the help from friendly tribes of Native Americans made their survival possible.
They were taught to grow corn and wheat, and were shared with many herbal medicinal remedies by these Native Americans for treatment of ailments.

With the harvest being so bountiful, they all decided to celebrate with a glorious feast.Giving thanks to their friends and God to have lived and prospered.

I hope this answers your question hun *hug* May you and all you love find the coming year full of bounty and fullfilled dreams!

As a show of appreciation for their assistance throughout the very early years of our fledgling country, we killed off 95% of the Native Americans. Hooray for goodwill! Tongue

Stick with subjects in which you have real information to share please.

Well, I know we killed some, spread a lot of deisease throughout their various tribes(or nations, to be politically correct), and moved them to reservations, which happened to not be where White cities were. There were even people who purposefully spread diseases like small pox to kill them off. Maybe 95% was a slight exaggeration, but it's not incorrect.

If we happened to kill them in battles that they started, it makes no difference, because they were here first and we took over their land that they held for thousands of years before they even knew Europeans existed.

The strong live and the weak die; there's no escaping it. Europeans had the choice of being persecuted in England or persecuting Indians in America (AND YES, I KNOW that:

Some Europeans came to America only to make money (Jamestown)
At the start, Indian raids severely hurt helpless Europeans.
Indian removal would have taken FAR longer if it weren't for diseases that killed off most tribes before the Europeans even got that far inland.

The killing of Native Americans took place 2 centuries...let's stop and reflect that number''''200 YEARS after a holding in America was established.

Also of note..several other major wars took place having NOTHING to do with the colonists, and most notably due to France and Spain and England.

For the love of GOD.....bring me facts that you actually KNOW...or at least be smarter in your web-searches....dear..I may be old...but stupid I am not.
You can call me many things...that's just not one of them.

As for this thread...it has served it's purpose.AGAIN I hope today was a blessing to you all.

Did someone piss in your coffee? Cause it seriously looks like you just came in here to take a shit on our days.

But on a side note, I had a very good day, ate dinner with my Aunt, and went to the movie, Twilight. Smile

Okay, to clarify: I was talking about the initial conflicts between Native Americans and Europeans (i.e. in Columbus's day due to Thanksgiving being relevant to THIS TIME PERIOD). Yes, harsh government policies towards Indians did exist until the late 1800's (the closing of the final frontier).

And yes, Native Americans were involved in several "wars" with Europeans/Americans, such as:
-Bacon's Rebellion
-The French And Indian War/ The Seven Years War
-Metacom's War/ King Phillip's War
-Pontiac's Rebellion
-The American Revolution

And also:

-Conflicts with initial Europeans in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
-Closing the Western frontier~the last major Indian rebellion.

I KNOW my history. AT the end of this year, I'll have 8 COLLEGE CREDITS in American History. The context of my post referred to initial European-Native American conflicts.

To rephrase my original post: Life is the survival of the fittest. Between the Europeans and the Native Americans, the Europeans succeeded and lived while the Indians failed and died. While one may blame the Europeans and Americans for abusing their superiority (militarily) and killing the Indians, can't the Indians be blamed for being too weak to defend themselves? Was it moral, it's for the individual to decide. Is Social Darwinism moral, perhaps not but it's certainly relevant nonetheless.

Hey, hey, hey. Lets get back to Thanksgiving.

I didn't get a chance to eat with my family or friends because I am in stationed in Japan. Nor will I spend Christmas with them. Count yourselves lucky that you have what you all take for granted. I didn't noticed all the things I have actually lost until after I joined and sacerficed them. Stop this stupid blabbering. It is pointless and degrading.

Now, on Saturday I will be celerbrationg Thanksgiving at one of my SSgt's house so all is not totally lost.
Live, Learn, then STFU.

The whole situation sounds very similar to the whites vs aboriginal people here in Australia.

Back in the day, people were only people if they were White. We've come a long way so far, and everyone should be proud.
